I run on two machines full gnome 2.32 and full kde 4.6.3 and can see no
problems. Not sure if other users which do the same have problems.

Not only you can have as many desktop environments as you can learn, but you can also run them simultaneously (which doesn't mean that you should). Anyway KDE + Gnome + XFCE + LXDE + others are not a problem. I install them by default on all Linux distros and BSD variants. Kde and Gnome rarely conflict (although I've seen that already on rare occasions) and usually play well together.

And remember there can't be any conflicts when two different users are using different DEs. DEs are a user preference, they do not influence the system (where the user can not write).

Yes - during the transition from KDE3 to KDE4 I had both environments active and simply logged out to change session. In this case KDE3 programs ran happily in KDE4 and some vice versa. I assume that in most other cases there would be some tasks where you would have to use different programs but most programs will run happily in the other environment - I run several Gnome programs in my KDE environment without any problems.
