xserver problems with installing and configuring nvidia driver openSUSE 11.4

[QUOKA]

openSUSE 11.4 with nvidia gforce 6600 GT and crt monitor which needs at least 85 Hz, not 50 or 60 Hz

After running nvidia-xconfig (manual or by yast2) the systen will not boot in GUI.
sax2 isn't available any more, so I don't know how to configure my xorg.conf.

Where I may found the error log file from xorg, which folder?

The easy way to get NVIDIA - "When installation is complete reboot." - and you will have a problem!

nvidia-xconfig was launched by yast2, but if I start it manually at the DOS Prompt, the result is always the same.

nvidia-xconfig kills the whole system, and sax2 ist simply "dropped". How can I configure my machine for running 1024 x 768 at 87 Hz? The hardware is the same, except the mouse. I had to buy a new one, beause the old doesn't work since openSUSE 11.3 It's now a Logitech RX 250.

May anyone write an xorg.conf that will work?

I tried the old xorg.conf from 11.2 on 11.4, and I deleted the xorg.conf before running nvidia-xconfig. Always the same problem: no GUI

Then I copied some sections, without success. I'm fed up!

Did you also try what happens if you remove the xorg.conf at all and not run
nvidia-config?
I have 3 machines here with different nvidia cards and all of them can run
KDE without xorg.conf.

Same here. IMHO having an xorg.conf many times "confuses" the system. Try booting without one.

Try booting without one.

Without xorg.conf the GUI (GNOME) will appear, but with maximum resolution: 800 x 600 and bad refresh rate: 60 Hz or 57 Hz. The CRT monitor is flickering badly. I neet at least 85 Hz, and a resolution of 1024 x 768, and I have to set a strong gamma correction.

NVIDIA X Server Settings displays the message:
You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver.
Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.

After I did this (run `nvidia-xconfig` as root and restart xserver), suddenly this message appears:

[gdm1274]: Warning: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of x display failures reached. check x server log for errors

Did you balcklist nouveau and are you using nomodeset?
That sounds as if it falls back to nouveau.

I think in that case I would do it the classical way (it is called the hard
way but it is not really hard), but before you do it look into the first
link and try if the following helps

Disable Kernel Mode Setting (KMS)
Blacklist nouveau

from the first link below.
If not I would completely go the "hard way" using the binary nvidia
installer as described in the link.
