Can anyone tell me, I’ve searched posts for the answer, why openSuSE chose to switch the default Office from openOffice to LibreOffice?
First, I at least looked at libre, looks ok.
Then, I went to the ‘site’ found NO support, forum etc. was directed to opendesktop and again, No forum, not way to comment other than irc and that is way to easy to be ‘band from’ if they don’t like what one has to say…
I, as of this post, have not read anything overwhelming about libreoffice…
this switch is, at this point, not as bad a the fools over at KDE deciding without the use of a normal brain, to switch default file manager from konqueror to dolphin…
Bad decision.

No, it’s a Real Question… Albeit a very long winded question, still a question.
I’d really like to know when and why.
As long as I have a office, kofffice, openOffice, libre, I don’t care.
I mean, I could install openOffice from Sun if I want it, right…
That’s your choice. LibreOffice is a fork and a replacement of OpenOffice that came about because Oracle isn’t trusted by the OSS community. It’s being adapted quickly.
Is there anything in particular that you find missing or lacking in LibreOffice, or are you just attached to OOo?
Oracle pulled some dirty tricks, so the OO.o community forked and created LibreOffice. LibreOffice is under more competent management now, so it has already implemented long asked for features and fixes. This change was very recent, hence the lack of forums and such. All this will be coming before long.
I suggest sticking with LibreOffice as it is superior, and will only get better.

At the moment the entire ‘open office’ and ‘libre office’ situation is a bit in flux, but the pandora’s box has been opened now and hard to say where this will head.
To answer the original question 11.4 because for the last three years, openSUSE has always installed Go-OO and LibreOffice has merged all of the Go-OO code into it. But, in effect there has been no change because you have not been getting the Sun/Oracle version of OpenOffice for years; all the Novell associated distributions have been using Go-OO to which LibreOffice is a direct successor.

place(s) to do so are clearly marked in the Communications channel wiki

If one wishes to recommend an improvement to openSUSE, then the place to
do so is openSUSE fate. The openSUSE forums is not the place.
For the OP, in case you did not know (and it definitely appears that
way) the openSUSE forum is to provide support for problems, it is not
the place for such observations if you wish to accomplish anything
useful. If you wish help on a specific area, please post, and many
volunteers who are NOT paid, will likely bend over to help.
be sure and start off your question in the mail list by telling them how
stupid their decision was, i’m pretty sure they are eager to accept such
with grace…

Months ago.
Do a search on the News subforum for the word “Libre” in the title, and you
will find most of what was said at the time and links.
If you are referring to the recent security update that switched OOo to LO,
well, an update was needed and OOo was impossible to update, as the code
branch used in openSUSE is the old Go-oo, which has now disappeared because
it is now LO.
I’m not happy about this last update (for 11.2), but it can’t be helped.

I have nothing negative to say about Libre… Haven’t had any problems.
Just like to know why people do what they do and why the decision was made to part from long time app. openOffice (which i thought was Sun Microsystems…)

I never notice, but even on my openSuSE 11.2 / KDE 4.3.5 workstation which I refuse to upgrade because of poor design on a fav app (gwenview)… the Office on it IS LibreOffice…

A recent security update replaced OOo with LO.
