    Exclamation 11.4 not starting X or KDE. New install

    Hi there. I am new to openSUSE. I ve been using Kubuntu on my laptop for several years and CentOS in many servers for many years too. Since Kubuntu and KDE are sort of 2nd class citizens for Ubuntu I decided to move on to openSUSE.

    I did a new install in my HP DV6646us laptop, which was running Kubuntu 9.04 perfectly for 2 yrs. No problems on the install. I downloaded the 11.4 DVD, checked md5 on download and after burning the dvd, both ok.

    So, when installed finished and rebooted, i got a TTY login with crappy video.
    I googled and found that i could add 'nomodeset' to the GRUB line, which sort of fixed the video. But when I try startkde I get this errors:
    Code:
    $ startkde
    kcheckrunning: error while loading shared libraries: libX11.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

    ------------------------------
    xinit failed. /usr/bin/Xorg is not set uid, maybe thats the reason?
    If so either use a display manager or adjust /etc/permissions.local
    xauth: error while loading shared libraries: libXau.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    Theres no /usr/bin/Xorg file!
    So i cannot do Xorg -configure either, as I read in the NVidia drivers Sticky.

    I managed to enable nvidia repos with yast and do a software update w/o problems.

    My hardware specs:
    HP Pavilion DV6646us: AMD 1.9 GHz Turion 64 X2 / 2Gb RAM / 160Gb HDD / NVIDIA GeForce Go 7150M / 15.4" WXGA / BroadCom BCM4311 wireless / Built-in webcam.

    If i start in failsafe mode, its the same thing.

    Thanks for your help and tips!!

    If you have done the media check, I'd do a Live Session off the CD to see if the problem persists. If it doesn't, then a reinstall is on order, if it does, something more sinister is at hand.

    Well, the media check on the DVD turned out OK. So I just reinstalled and now its fine. Well, sort of. I have other issues that I have to go trough yet:

    1. An annoying crack on the speakers once in a while;
    2. I have to discover where to change the screen resolution;
    3. I have to make my broadcomm wlan work;
    4. and finally i have to check if the hdd load_cycle_count bug is solved in this distro.

    I will go trough them and open the proper threads. (but you guys can leave tips of where to find them here ;-) )

    Overall, I am much satisfied with openSUSE than with Kubuntu's KDE. Nice work!

    Most of the items are done. Just need to figure out the sound issue.
    I opened a thread if someone wants to help. [1]
    Thanks!
