There seems to be 2 sound cards on board :
    Code:
    # lspci
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) (rev 40)
01:05.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc RS880 Audio Device [Radeon HD 4200]
I installed 2 instances of SuSE 11.4 because of debugging init.d issues and then accidentally uninstalled pulseaudio in one of these installations, I reinstalled it but sound never came back.

The errors in /var/log/messages as above posted. I guess modprobe or something I need to load snd-hda-intel but don't know how to.

The debugging that led to breaking sound was this (FYI):
    11.4 troubled boots

Did you try reconfiguring them in Yast?

So you now have a clean install of 11.4 ? Ensure you install also 'pavucontrol' and run 'pavucontrol' the 1st time you run any application and tune pavucontrol for that selected application.

If you wish me to take a more detailed look then please provide the information recommended to be provided in the multimedia stickie (see quote in that stickie): Welcome to multimedia sub-area

... but my guess is if you carefully use pavucontrol then you should be able to solve this.
