Thread: Opensuse 11.4 Networkmanager not working properly

Thumbs down Opensuse 11.4 Networkmanager not working properly

Friends, I came across new issue, that really bothers me.

On fresh install of 11.4 everything worked fine, but after some updates networkmanager stopped working properly on my netbook (intel atom n270 based).

When I log in, network manager shows that networking is disabled and I can't connect. Checking/unchecking the checkbox does nothing. All settings in Yast are OK.

To make it work, I run "/etc/init.d/network restart" and then plug in the wire OR (in case of wireless connection) I restart network from console, unchecck and check the checkbox in networkmanager and only then it starts to work as it should.

    Anyone?

    P.S.
Noted that issue on several attempts to install 11.4 on my netbook.

Hello tell me your installation process of your network manager.

    And post the output
    Code:
kquitapp knetworkmanager qdbus org.kde.kded /kded loadModule networkmanagement

    Well, nothing extraordinary.

I installed opensuse 11.4 from DVD (32bit), added 1 extra user, installed IBUS instead of SCIM, updated LibreOffice, updated system, Configured NFS client - nothing related to network manager or network devices and no problems so far.

Suddenly NM stopped working properly (shows that networking is disabled) - now I have to restart network manually each time I boot the system and only then it starts to work OK - right as it should.

Switching to plasmoid does not help.

As to output of that command - it's nothing. NM just quits without any messages.

    Try to install it
    Code:
    # zypper install plasmoid-networkmanagement

As I said, plasmoid has the same issue - doesn't help.

Can you change your network from NetworkManager or Plasmoid to traditional ifup/ifdown ? Just to see if the network boots itself always after reboot.
Any interesting messages in /var/log/[K|N]etworkManager or dmesg ?

    Just out of curiosity,
Have you re-checked your YAST > System Services (runlevel) > Advanced > Network
    (and other network related services)

    to verify that each are
    - Current State is "Running"
    - Configured to start on bootup

It does sound to me you're describing a situation where the Network Manager is not functional because the underlying networking services aren't started, but once you've started then Network Manager works. As you've noted, I would guess changing the Network Manager isn't going to help, but if you do find something useful in your "messages" file I'm sure it would be extremely helpful... But I'm going to guess that would be problematical now since you've likely booted/rebooted your system many, many times since you first noticed your problem.

Exactly, the problem appears to be in switched off networking service, which is very strange.
I've checked runlevels and networking is enabled on 3 and 5, but doesn't actually start. Are these values normal?

Any interesting messages in /var/log/[K|N]etworkManager or dmesg ?
Nothing interesting, except for networkmanager log
    Code:
NetworkManager[2051]: <info> Networking is enabled by state file
which is OK, as i see the situation...

Not sure the meaning of that last entry in your networkmanager.log, but
Can you verify that Network Manager is enabled (and not "classic IFUP/IFDOWN") in your YAST Networking Services?

check your /var/log/message when system boots and see if any error
    regarding grup-set-default not in path.
