Thread: Problems with upgrade applications in Opensuse 11.4.

Default Problems with upgrade applications in Opensuse 11.4.

    Hi.
I was anxious to update my Opensuse to 11.4 but was worried about my slow internet connection. However an user of this forum kindly sent me a DVD by mail wich enabled me to do what I wanted. I just finished making a fresh install of Opensuse 11.4. It's wonderful. Almost all applications have improved a lot. But, unhappily some few have acquired new problems now, specially some that are in repos but not in the DVD. Let me number those I have found:
1 - In all versions of Gnome ctrl+alt+arrow (left or right) was the shorcut to switch between workspaces. Now it doesn't work. When I go to keyboard shortcuts in Gnome all options in the section of desktop enviroment are written "unknown action". There is no place to create shortcuts for actions related to the desktop as switching between workspaces. (I also want to use the opportunity to ask how can I create a shortcut to switch between workspaces in KDE too.)
2 - I used Qsynth/Fluidsynth as the default output synth for Rosegarden in Opensuse 11.3. In all versions Fluidsynth recognized bank variations immediatily and automatically as I changed them in Rosegarden. Now I installed the latest versions from Opensuse download site and it doesn't recognize bank variations anymore. It only recognize presets of the first bank of my soundfont. Strangely, in Fluidsynth-dsii I can load presets of any bank. But Qsynth/Fluidsynth doesn't recognize them.
3 - Nvidia proprietary drviers always used to cause some minor problems with compiz. But now they are worst than ever! When I launch applications most of the times windows come maximized but on the screen they are not really maximized at all. I have to click on the window title to bring it to the right size. If I don't do it letters inside that window don't appear correctly. Sometimes I click in close button in a window and it only works after the 2nd or 3rd click. And there are another some minor flaws or slowdowns.
4 - In a terminal I typed su. As superuser I typed nautilus. It didn't launch and gave me back the following message:
    GLib-GIO:ERROR:gdbusconnection.c:2279:initable_init: assertion failed: (connection->initialization_error == NULL)
I just can launch nautilus if I login as root.

If anyone knows fixes or workarounds for these problems please let me know.

    One tip:
If anyone have tried to connect Opensuse 11.4 to internet using DSL and it complained about one or more missing files and you didn't find those files in neither in DVD nor in 11.4 repos, it really has happenned (at until last week if anyone didn't correct it yet). The workaround is to download them from 11.3 repos and install them manually using Yast. It really works!

This is the shortcut for compiz switcher. So is compiz activated ?

You have to do this to make it work :

    Code:
    su -l
and notice the "dash" and the letter L.

I can't help with all this, sorry. But

    1. Even though desktop effects are nice, I usually turn them off as they are unnecessary for a work machine. But actually desktop effects on or off should not affect the shortcut. It works for me fine. I know you didn't mention desktop effects on this point but @DaaX did, so I just wanted to clarify things.

    2. No idea...

    3. What nvidia device is it. Did you follow this: nVidia Driver via Repo in 11.3 & 11.4 - Guide

    4. Never login as root. And I never use Nautilus as root.

    Thanks for all the answers.
As for Gnome shortcuts I found out that when compiz is active it takes control over them. I didn't notice that the cube was not active so I had no shortcut also. Activating the cube or inactivating compiz solved the problem.
I'm frustated. I really liked compiz effeccts. I found it practical to switch between applications and workspaces just moving cursor to the edge of screen. But I really had to turn compiz off because this time it's becoming very uncomfortable to use along with new Nvidia drivers.
AS for Qsynth, no solution. But I found a workaround for Timidity that I will place in my thread "How can I make Timidity recognize bank variations?".

    Hi Carl.
    Your Howto's are very instructive.
I just installed driver directly from Nvidia repo.
    I didn't followed these steps:
Edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and add nomodeset to the boot arguments in the default boot.
In Yast > System > etc/Sysconfig editor go to System > Kernel > NO_KMS_IN_INTRID and change the default no to yes

What do they do? What is the difference between using them or just installing the driver?

It basically disables the kernel's nvidia driver (nouveau). KMS = kernel mode setting
That way you'll reduce the possibility of conflicts with your installed propriety driver.

Would I have the same results if I just uninstalled noveau driver via yast? (That would be much easier than editting grub and sysconfig.) Or is it really necessary or safier to follow the steps above?

That is what I did, uninstall it.
I did edit the grud and checked the sysconfig. After the system was up and running and it didn't seem to make a difference on my box. It was already set in sysconfig.. Loading Nvidia may have changed that.

Really, It only takes 30 seconds to edit grub and sysconfig. Then reboot. It is not a big deal.

I uninstalled noveau driver. Didn't see any difference yet. Don't know if it's a better, worse or equal solution in relation to those mentioned above.
After about 8 months using rosegarden I finally found out that in the option of banks in device manager it's possible to define the msb and lsb number of bank variations. If each variation number is defined in msb and also in lsb they may be recognizable by any synth app like timidity and qsynth.
Answering what Carl asked above my device is Geforce 8400 GS. Can knowing this help to solve my problems?
I have had no problems with compiz in KDE but in Gnome I had to inactive it at all.
