How to Upgrade KDE4.6 in openSUSE 11.2/11.3/11.4

This was written for openSUSE 11.4. Older versions of openSUSE may encounter dependency problems when trying to upgrade.

  • Step 1: Add the repository

Open a terminal and become su -
Copy and paste this code with your mouse:

zypper ar -f http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/46/openSUSE_11.4/ kde46
zypper ref

(a) to accept

Older versions:
11.3:

zypper ar -f http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/46/openSUSE_11.3/ kde46

11.2

zypper ar -f http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/46/openSUSE_11.2/ kde46
  • Step 2: Switch packages

Once the repo is added - close the terminal and open Yast > Software Management
And do as shown here: Switch to kde46 repo

Let that run. Then either reboot, or logout and back in. You should now have upgraded kde.

  • Step 3: Switch Packman Again

Return to Yast > Software Management and:
Switch Packman

Hi caf4926,

Your update advice worked its usual magic, now running on KDE 4.6.1

Have a great week :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks!

I have factory and it is stable. Why release?

Keep factory and see why.

Otherwise take my advice and use the above.

Thank you @caf4926.

Good news Ashley
It’s not unusual for Mancunians to venture to the Lakes - Do you ever get up here?

followed the above steps but just before i clicked accept on the kde4 repo just added, i notied lots of the software was older than that installed. it has installed(available) and the available versions were older than those installed, yet i’m running kde 4.6.0

any ideas?

Caf4926 can you plz explain whats the difference between the 2 Kde-4.6.3 repo’s ?
thx in advance

Which two
I only quote One

i ment whats the differnce between kde repo
Index of /repositories/KDE:/Release:/46/openSUSE_11.4 kde46

and repo
Index of /repositories/KDE:/Distro:/Factory/openSUSE_11.4

i use the first one but was curious about the differnce between the two

KDE:/Release is stable, Distro:/Factory a development version. absolute
bleeding edge (weekly snapshots from trunk, i think) is KDE unstable.
Distro:/Factory is quiet stable at times; on occasion that changes though.

phani.

It’s already been said but to be sure you are clear.
Release:/46 is the latest stable release of kde 4.6

Distro:/Factory is complicated. It’s used for the next release, so it’s development really, but strictly speaking it’s not ‘unstable’ though it often can be, especially in the early stages of a new release development. Not recommended unless you know what you are doing and are involved in the testing process of the development release.

openSUSE:Roadmap - openSUSE

Ok i see
Thx for the explaining

Some of you will want to use the respective KDE4-Extra-repository:

zypper ar -f http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Extra/KDE_Release_46_openSUSE_11.4/ KDE46-Extra

…and don’t forget to deactivate repositories that do not match the used KDE-version.

However, one should notice that pretty much all of the various KDE-repositories often change due to new versions being released, so one should try to be up to date on these changes. There is a nice overview in the german openSUSE-Wiki (KDE/Paketdepots – openSUSE) that helps doing so a lot. Is there an English equivalent?
