As I still can’t get Firefox 4 to work with BankID on my 11.4 x86_84 installations using the default IcedT Java plugin (java-1_6_0-openjdk-plugin-1.6.0.0_b20.1.9.7-1.2.1.x86_64), I’ve added the java-1_6_0-sun-plugin-1.6.0.u24-1.2.1.x86_64 package to try this instead.
But how to enable the Sun Java plugin as default in Firefox 4 ?

i uninstalled the non-Sun java using YaST, and have had no trouble
with my banks app since…
certainly most folks only need or have one java…so whats to lose?

Do I understand you right that you just removed the openjdk plugin, then installed the sun java plugin without need to enable the new plugin with Firefox>Tools or manually by adding a symlink?

no it is easier than messing with links…just remove icetea and make
sure you have real sun, this way:
-go into YaST
-then to Software Management
-then type openjdk in the search blank
-click to search
-right click on openjdk bits on the right, select to Delete
-then type java in search blank and look to make sure these two are
either marked with green check to install OR with black check to keep:
–java-1_6_0-sun
–java-1_6_0-sun-plugin
[note: mine says exactly that in the left column and “Java™ 6
Runtime Environment” and “Browser plugin files for java-1_6_0-sun” in
the second column…but you have 64 so yours may be different]
-click on “Accept” button
-YaST will probably say it wants to install some other java related
stuff, and/or maybe it wants to delete some openjdk stuff–let it,
click ok…
-when you are done shutdown and restart your firefox, type
about:plugins in the url bar and see if you don’t find Java™
Plug-in 1.6.0_[something, maybe with 64] ready to go…
-give the bank another whirl…good luck (a lot of banks today use
game maker software)

Yeah, thanks. In my case I just had to remove the openjdk plugin with YaST. When Firefox was loaded, the installed Sun Java plugin became automatically enabled and BankID works ok as in previously. What confused me initially here, was that while the openjdk plugin was enabled, the Sun Java plugin was not found (listed) as an option by Firefox.

openSUSE and Mandrive support a special subsystem called “update-alternatives”
run help and/or man to see how it works to point your system to the JDK or JRE of your choice
update-alternatives --help

No need to uninstall, particularly in scenarios like Dev where you might need to switch back and forth between flavors of Java.
