Thread: installed nvidia thru oneclick lost X [desktop]

  1. #1

Default installed nvidia thru oneclick lost X [desktop]

    This is regarding machine #1
I found a oneclick site to install nvidia drivers for opensuse 11.3 64 bit.
    http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers
It didn't actually say if it was for or not for 64 bit.
The install was ok - no problems.
I rebooted and all that would come on the monitor was a big command line terminal.
So, obviously, it didn't go as well as I had hoped.
I can move around in it but would like some direction on how to get back the display drivers I had before I did the one click install. [If thats even possible]
I tried startx, but it gave me errors about not finding it and to visit the xorg site.
I can always reinstall, but it would be nice if I could recover, without having to.
    Thank you.

If you can follow the directions here

    caf4926 ty for replying

I did as suggested, but might have done something wrong or my problem is different.
I am writing this in failsafe mode, where it seems that things function normally.

However, when I boot into regular[?] mode, it still boots into console only.
'startx' does not work and when I read msgs looking in /var/log for more info.
Specifically /var/log/xorg.0.log but also /var/log/kdm which are too long for this forum.
I have submitted them to pastebin:
    Xorg log - Pastebin.com

    This line appears In Xorg.log:
"13.748] (EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)"

    kdm log - Pastebin.com

    In kdm log I get:
"Failed to load module "nvidia" (module does not exist)"
, although I have gone and checked in Software and have seen that nvidia is indeed installed.

I have checked a few other things that I found thru your "Other references", but I think I may be in over my head on this one.
Both of these logs are quite lengthy and I don't know much about interpreting them. Would you help by having a glance and maybe something you notice may need to be changed?

    Thank You

    Post result of:

    Code:
    rpm -qa | grep nvidia
    Code:
    uname -a
Your kdm log says: Current Operating System: Linux linux-y8oh 2.6.34-12-desktop

Xorg says: Current Operating System: Linux DBD64 2.6.34.7-0.7-desktop

Can you just confirm your OS and the above codes

    It's too puzzling for me
    Just works for me
    8500GT

I never had any trouble and so I never had to work hard at it. Hopefully someone with troubleshooting experience can help.

Boot into failsafe and open yast, uninstall the Nvidia driver that you installed. Reboot. Hopefully that will get you back to were you started.
Now open yast again and configure the repo for Nvidia and install it from the repo.
If all goes well it should work.

@ linclkh - ty Uninstalling it [nvidia] thru Yast did the trick. Brought me back to where I began. [nouveau]
@caf4926 - ty for your help. I am using the 8500GT card also, but maybe different else hardware. I would like to use the proprietary driver but maybe I won't be able to. Is it possible it won't work if its 64 bit c2d?
Maybe a little more investigation on my part is needed. Thanks
