    Default serial modem problem [11.3]

    Hi,

with my new motherboard and 11.3 I am not able to use my modem connected via the serial port. the modem worked under 11.1.

I copied the mgetty configuration files, but all that results is a change of the modems LEDs. from mgettys logfile I derive that it receives no answer from the modem.
same when sending different commands to the modem via a terminal program: change of one LED on the modem but no answer. (I disabled mgetty for that test).
I tried several commands to reset the modem, but with no result.

does anyone have an idea how I could test the modem or the serial port?
how could I get the modem working?

    thanx
    paul

that tells me the modem received something..

i'd stress the software a little more first (it is easier)..

i know nothing about mgetty except i see it is available in YaST for
my 11.3 system as version 1.1.36-30.1

and, i wonder if that was the version which generated the mgetty
configuration files you copied from 11.1; maybe there is a new setting
to turn off the wait for reply ... or or

failing that i'd next suspect the cable (because it is easier) and try
    another known to work..

and, can you sub in a known good modem (maybe a static spark in the
    cable during unhook/rehook fried something)

then hmmmmm....you are down to the new MB and its ports, and the hard
questions i can't answer--except, back in the dark ages i had a plug
to attach to the serial port and then run a software pack that would
test all serial port functions...that is probably still around
somewhere (mine came from Norton or maybe Hayes)..

you might see if the motherboard manufacturer has an authorized
service facility in your area....if, so they should be happy to try to
prove it is not a MB problem...or, maybe a repair shop near you can
    help with that hardware test..

otherwise, if you contact the manufacturer you might find the bug is
known and they will ship you a new board in return for the one you have..

let us know how it goes..

Try with minicom. Check the cable from the MB to the box. Check reversal of
    the cable. Check bios settings.

Assuming you still have your old box, try the modem and cable there.

I tried with minicom: no response.
I checked the cable: all pins have contact
the port is activated in the bios

I don't have the old box...

is there a possibility to check for interrupt conflicts?

Change speed, and the other settings. Play about. Power-off/on the modem,
you should get garbage in minicom, or text.

    Is it not reversed?

    Check the boot log.

    Too bad.

    The log would say.

    the external cable was fine.
but after checking the pin assignement it looks like I received the wrong internal cable (from the MB to the housing).
    thanx for your help...

    Wow!

Welcome... when you get the right cable, and it works, please drop a note here.

My MB has a serial port (I chose that MB because of that - and other
things, of course), but my box did not have the socket. I had rip it from
an older box, but the cable was so short that I had to redo the cable
    myself. But it works :-)
