Default I'm a big newbie in folder sharing to a Windows 7 pc... I need some assistance

    Hi all,

I have an opensuse machine - 11.4, running KDE as my desktop.
My wifes computer is a Windows 7 PC.

I have installed SAMBA and have configured it to load at each boot.

I have set the domain name to WORKGROUP as this is domain name my wife has on her pc.

I have shared the video folder within Dolphin in KDE.

I'm uncertain about the meaning of the netbios setting (despite reading Chapter29.Samba) and whether I should adjust this setting.

Basically, I'm able to see my wife's computer name within Linux, though within Windows, I'm unable to see my linux network.

Is it due to the settings that I currently have on my linux pc.

The documentation that I'm reading so far is confusing for me.

    Thank you for your assistance.

See the following two Howtos and follow them carefully. The first is written
specifically for OpenSuse and they both give step by step instructions.

    http://opensuse.swerdna.org/suselanprimer.html
    and
    http://opensuse.swerdna.org/susesambawin7.html

If after going over this you are still having problems, please post the
    contents of /etc/samba/smb.conf.

Added information. There is currently a problem with AppArmors profiles for
Samba that prevents Samba from running. Go to YaST -> Novell AppArmor ->
AppArmor Control Panel -> set profile modes
and set both usr.sbin.nmbd and usr.sbin.smbd to "complain" instead
    of "enforce".

Another way to go would be for example to install WinSCP on the Windows pc, start sshd on openSUSE and use WinSCP for copying files between the two computers.

That's just another way, using samba is perfectly fine and will work when configured properly.

    Best reagards,
    Greg

Excellent tip. Fixed my issue. FYI in the /var/log/samba/log.smbd I was seeing:

    Starting Samba SMB daemon [2011/04/02 17:26:38, 0] lib/fault.c:250(dump_core_setup)
Unable to setup corepath for smbd: Permission denied

Which might help others to find this thread...

    Cheers
