Unable to watch maximised iPlayer

I am using 11.4 on a brand new computer. The original beta version of Firefox had flickering images when using something like the BBC’s iPlayer to stream material. Upgrading to the latest version of Firefox fixed this.
However, another problem, a virtually frozen stream when maximising the screen, has not been cured. At the same time, the Esc button to click out of the fullscreen image doesn’t instantly work -I have to punch it several times! I switched over keyboards, but the problem remained.
What is going on?
Can anybody walk me through a fix?
I would be most grateful for any help.
Many thanks.

I don’t have this in Firefox with the Beeb. IMDB has issues, but that’s another story.

Have you ever used get_iplayer
It downloads the program you want to watch.

Try installing Seamonkey and or Opera and try those

Hi
I have downloaded Sea Monkey as per your suggestion.
It’s currently sitting in my download file, but I have no idea how to run it, never having done that with a Linux program before. Can you help?
Thanks.

No stop

wait a min

Seamonkey is in the repos

Open Yast > Software Management
Search for seamonkey
Check to install
accept

You may find other updates get added too, which may be part of your problem

I oh so wanted sea monkey to work but nothing doing!
The maximised screen was a little better, but the Esc button takes FOREVER to take effect.
Any other suggestions?

You don’t say which desktop you are using but, if you are using KDE, Konqueror has no problems with the iPlayer.

Disable desktop effects if they are on.

If they are not or that doesn’t help, open a terminal and become su -

I didn’t work.
BTW, I am on Gnome.
Here is the information you asked for (sorry, I don’t know how to “quote” it)

Neither does SeaMonkey, or even Firefox 4, have any problems here with BBC iPlayer on KDE or Gnome 11.4.

A full-screen freeze can be due to graphics driver problems/bug, but the OP provided no useful info about the machine in question, only that it’s new.

I have had an intermittent freeze on switching to full-screen and varying results when freeing with Esc key, but that was on a non-standard 11.3 with an upgraded kernel.

Agreed
Some info on your graphics…use this to help inform us…

/sbin/lspci -nnk

It doesn’t freeze; the image continues on a frame-by-frame basis.
This is the computer I am using. It does not have a standalone graphics card.
But if it is the computer, why does the ESC button not work sharply?

This is your graphics blurb:

00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Intel Corporation Core Processor DRAM Controller [8086:0040] (rev 18)
Subsystem: Foxconn International, Inc. Device [105b:0dc7]

	Kernel driver in use: i915

But it doesn’t specifically detail the device, except that it’s Intel and uses i915 driver.

About the Esc. button: Darn if I/We know
What happens if you use your mouse in the screen controls to get out of full screen?

Even the mouse is very sluggish!

Open a terminal and do: top

keep it on top (in view as iplayer is running)

what do you notice as you try to Esc.

  • I have to sleep

At the risk of sounding stupid, I can’t continue to look at the terminal if I have iPlayer full screen.

[8086:0042] device is Clarkdale chipset with integrated graphics, and is related to the infamous Arrandale (mobile chipset) and Ironlake GPU. There have been problems with kernel/driver support of Arrandale/Clarkdale, up to and including the standard kernel in 11.4 (2.6.37).

A search of Novell bugzilla found this: Bug 680384 - intel [Ironlake] 1080p video lag (vlc, kaffeine) and others, and it mentions Flash video in the report. BBC iplayer uses Flash, so it could indicate that there are still problems in this area for 11.4 and Clarkdale/Arrandale support.

Confused,

This sounds very worrying…

However, I was discussing this with somebody who runs Ubunto on their laptop and had similar problems with a freezing picture. They used this fix:

sudo mkdir /etc/adobe
echo “OverrideGPUValidation=true” >~/mms.cfg
sudo mv ~/mms.cfg /etc/adobe

I know nothing about code, but does that have any application in Suse?

I’m definitely not “confused”, but you are not the first to err on that.

I can’t answer your question re that “fix”, someone else may do so. I suspect you may have to enter that in a terminal (as root) and try it at your own risk. If it fails, afterwards you can just delete the directory /etc/adobe and the .cfg file (as root) placed there by those commands.

You could try booting with the nomodeset boot option (as described in the Release Notes, available via YaST). That will load an inferior driver called “fbdev” and bypasses Kernel Mode Setting (KMS) instead of loading the “intel” driver. The fbdev driver doesn’t support hardware acceleration or 3D (ie.g. no desktop effects). Flash video is only 2D. Your processor may be powerful enough to compensate.
