Firefox dies - first launch only

On OpenSuse 11.3, the first time I try to launch Firefox it immediately dies. Even happens using safe-mode with all addins disabled. After that it launches fine. Happens with my id or using root.

A good way to help find errors when starting applications is run them from konsole (or any other command terminal)

Try opening konsole and then type in firefox, it will try to run firefox and show errormsgs on whatever is failing which may give you a clue on fixing it

Quick way to run konsole is press alt & f2, type konsole and hit enter

You don’t say how you are trying to “launch” it, or anything about your
environment except that it’s 11.3.

All I can see in my crystal ball is a tatty bit of paper that says
“start it from the command-line and tell us what it says” in shaky
handwriting.

“Launch” means click on icon, select from menu, or start from command line.

When starting from the command line, I get the same warning whether it works or not (ie first or subsequent attempts) - “*** nss-shared-helper: Shared database disabled (set NSS_USE_SHARED_DB to enable)”

Please don’t run firefox as root. Be cautious about running any GUI program as root, and avoid a GUI login as root.

I suggest you create a new user account, and then see if this happens on that new account. If it doesn’t happen with the new account, then you probably have something messed up in your profile settings.

I always get that message. It does not seem to cause any problems. I just ignore it.

I’m seeing the same behavior. But not everytime. I.e., it’s not
reproducible on demand. It doesn’t seem to matter if I start from the
panel or the menu or by clicking on a link in an email message. Firefox
will start, run for about 5 seconds, then die. A dialog box will pop up
giving the option of sending a report to Mozilla, and asking if I’d like
to restart or close, etc. Since I’m not at home I can’t recall exactly
what it said.

I’m running 11.3, stock KDE install (4.4.5?). When Firefox updated
itself, there were a couple of plugins that were said to be incompatible
which were disabled. One of them was the openSUSE KDE theme integration
(can’t recall if it was Air or Oxygen).

I manually disabled two others - one was the google toolbar, and the
other was Novell’s Moonlight IIRC. I don’t think I had had the trouble
since. My guess is it was moonlight that was causing the problem. I’ll
re-enable them one by one tonight to try to isolate the issue.

For the OP, I’d recommend that you kill add-ons, then re-enable them
until you find which (if it is an add-on problem) is causing the issue.

Try this. Start firefox in safe mode but simply dismiss the box that pops
up and asks you if you want to make any of these changes permanent. Are you
able to run firefox normally (for just one time) after that?

This last message is harmless.

I used to see problems similar to what you are referring to, but it hasn’t
appeared to affect me lately, for at lest the last two weeks or so (before
that it was like clockwork). The cause/trigger when it was occuring in my
case was strange to say the least.

If your behaviour is the same as I was seeing…

When firefox won’t run, have a look at the file “compatibility.ini” in your
profile. It should contain a line like

LastVersion=3.6.10_2010091400/2010091400

As long as this line was like that, firefox wouldn’t run. To make firefox
run, I just had to change this line to anything else - change it to a
random string or even add or change a single character. After that, firefox
ran normally - but just one time.

Running firefox in safe mode (just getting far enough to dismiss the pop-up
box as mentioned above was enough) causes this particular line in
compatibility.ini to change so that firefox would run normally the next
time. The normal run of firefox however, caused the line in
compatibility.ini to be restored so the next run of firefox would fail and
the process would have to be repeated.

I could change that line and then set compatibility.ini to read only.
Firefox would run everytime after that (although I wasn’t sure what effect
if any that might have on the system, so I changed it back and just got used
to starting firefox tiwce).

After months of repeatable behaviour, it is no longer happening. I don’t
know when whatever it was changed, but about two weeks ago I forgot to use
the safemode step, and much to my surprise firefox ran. Has been fine
since.

I hope this helps you. If this is different than your problem then please
excuse my ramblings…:sunglasses:

is this an instance of firefox which you also use while booted to
another operating system–and have its config files on a partition
shared by both systems?

Quick followup to my previous post. I re-enabled google toolbar and so
far no problems. So my guess is it was the Novell supplied dooliewobber…

After upgrading to Firefox 4 the problem went away. The only plugin not carried over is the Novell one…

The issue was definately with Firefox. Had it on another system. When I applied the latest 3.6.17 patch from OpenSUSE Buildservice, it was fixed.
