Default stupid project? KDE 3.5 on OS 11.3 or 11.4

    Hi,

since some days I have an idea in my mind, which is maybe stupid. Or not...

The first Linux distro I tried in my life was Open Suse 10.1 with KDE 3. I did not succeed with it, but anyway: some days ago I thought "would be cool to have this feeling and this desktop again, somehow".

Then I read in some threads and so on that there are some people who have a current version of opensuse running, with KDE 3.5.

I have an old Laptop over here which I could use for that. It is lying around anyway, so why not trying to install OpenSuse with KDE 3.5

So when I now install 11.3 and add the KDe 3.5.10 repo, can I then replace KDE 4 with KDE 3.5 or do I need to install the system without graphic userinterface and install KDE 3.5 on top of it?

the combination from current system with all the drivers and so on and the old desktop would be cool somehow...

Or is this whole idea complete bulls**t? All this does not have any necessarity behind it, just for remembering how it was at this time...

which opinions and facts do you have regarding this?

This is a hot topic with an elite but small minority of die hard kde3 users.

IMO it's a complete waste of time and pure nostalgia.

Add the repo, install the pattern (assuming it presents the pattern in software manager, I can't be sure)
At login, choose your session kde3
You might want to switch the display and window manager in /etc/Sysconig, but it's not essential.

Well, there may be reasons to have KDE 3.x
One is, for the software that is written for KDE3. If i check on KDE Apps there are a lot of software that just run only with KDE3.
    Klibido is one of them.
So there might be good reason to have KDE3.
Personally, it doesn't make sense to me really. But there is also a revival project for KDE3. So instead of installing just the original KDE there is the other choice, which may be maintained.

    yeah thats right

I dont have real reasons for that. Its just some playing around. But maybe Ill leave it anyway, because it really doesnt make sense.

but according to this Trinity page, they are currently working on a opensuse repo... maybe Ill try it then

    thank you for your answers!

I did it anyway. Conclusion: the progress made with KDE 4 is incredible. And you are right, caf4926, its not worth it anymore.

Sometimes it's OK to have a trip down memory lane
But you can't go back that far and expect to feel the same about it today as you did back then

In that case you'll have to wait for a long time. Trinity is currently being ported to cmake, and it has little other improvements so far. I sugest you to just install conventional KDE3. You can find the instructions here: KDE3 - openSUSE

I also recommend using 11.3 rather than 11.4 because some users reported problems with kcontrol when using 11.4.

I don't use KDE3, and actually I'm KDE4 developer, but I have respect for people thanks to whom it's possible to use KDE3 in openSUSE.

    Keep'em coming

    Not at all.

I depend on at least two KDE3 applications that have not been ported to
KDE4 yet: rekall and kbabel. And my work as contributor to Linux depends on
me being able to use kbabel.

Rekall hasn't a successor or equivalent. Kbabel does, Lokalize - which is
not still finished and lacks what for me are most have features that kbabel
    had.

I don't care about kde3 or kde4, as in fact what I use is Gnome. But I do
need certain apps, and some have not been ported.
