Thread: Kernel variants - how to decide?

Default Kernel variants - how to decide?

I ran into an upgrade problem the other day. Not that that is relevant! However, it got me thinking. I have tried searching t' Internet. So far without any clear conclusions.

I note that there are a number of kernels available to install. How do I select the "best" one for me? For example there is:
    Code:
    kernel-default
    kernel-desktop
    kernel-pae
    kernel-pae-base
    And so on ...
Interestingly, I note that the description for the kernel-pae says this:
".... Therefore, the PAE kernel should be use on any system that supports it ...."

Can anyone point me at a wiki/howto/or any background information that would enable be to understand the issues?

    Regards, Martin

    Typically kernel-desktop

But tell us what your machine would be best described as: Eg; home/office or server or home/office laptop,...?

A further question: where on an install do you get to pick one of these options? If I ever knew how to this, I forget now. :-)

The installer decides for you, unless you tell it different.

    Hi,

I was deliberately avoiding specifics. I wanted to explore the principals.

But just for the heck of it: I would describe this machine as a workstation having 4-core i7 cpu + 6GB RAM, used for software development (and the odd email!).

Further, if the PAE kernel has such an uncompromising accolade, why is it not the default?

PAE was really for 32 bit machines with more than 3GB RAM

_64 machines would not need it and so should use either desktop or default

desktop: as the name suggests is designed for optimum experience for the 'Desktop' user

There is none I know, because such a doc would have to be done by the devs,
who usually skip the question. To them, code is selfexplanatory, no need to
    document it.
