Default Something weird happening with preload

    Hi,

I'm running a new install of openSUSE-11.4-KDE-i586 on my Eee 900 and, frankly, performance is terrible. If I attempt to enable Desktop Effects, which worked fine in openSUSE-11.3, they are immediately turned-off because compositing is too slow.

stop-preload is executed as part of boot but I am noticing prepare_preload appearing in the process list at intervals and consuming 40%-95% of CPU. I suspect this might be my performance killer.

Has anyone seen this happen before and is there a solution for it?

    Regards,

I am having problems with prepare_preload on my system (using 11.4 Gnome) every now and again. Booting can take longer and once booted the hard disk activity light is solid. System monitor reports no excessive cpu loading and only 290MB of ram being used.
However, "top" reports that prepare_preload is using all 2GB of ram. It runs this way for a few minutes, rendering the system largely unusable, until it finishes.
I don't have a link unfortunately, but there have been some bugs reported over the years regarding this issue. One reported fix is to remove the package "preload" and then "lock" the package so that it doesn't re-install itself. This seems a bit drastic, but it is something I would try. I'm currently waiting for replies to my thread, which may possibly offer different advice.
    An odd occurrence

11.4 being new, nobody really knows, so you should create a bugzilla and
wait for response from the devs.
