BOINC
I am having problems attaching projects to BOINC. I have just done a
clean install of 11.4 x86_64. Once logged into KDE, the BOINC client
appears to be running properly as root, but when I try to add a project
using boinc_gui, I get the message "connect: Operation now in progress",
and that's it, nothing else happens. No prompt, no anything.
If I kill the BOINC client and try to start it from console (as root or
as me), I get the following output and BOINC exits:
linux-vxxq:/home/snork # boinc

I am a little at a loss as to why it seems to run when the system starts
it, but not when I do manually and also why I can't attach my projects.
Any help will be appreciated.

I had an inkling that it might be a 64 vs 32 bit issue. I've installed
the 32 bit packages for the various libs, but that hasn't helped. Maybe
I'll have to do a 32 bit install...

Re: BOINC
Note that the BOINC version in the openSUSE repo is very old - 6.4.5 vs. 6.10.58 at BOINC home. I've been running 6.10.58 x86_64 out of $HOME for quite a while - works fine on 11.3.
I'd recommend that you get you it from here, run the script from CLI, and then use run_client to fire it up.
IIRC, the only 32 bit packages needed were some X11/OpenGL/Mesa libraries to display the fancy results - the computation worked without them.

Re: BOINC
I, too, have been running the latest BOINC 6.10.58 on a 32 bit system without any problems. However, I start it with run_manager.

Sadly, re installing 32bit openSUSE did not correct the problem...

Re: BOINC
I got the current BOINC client running w/o problems using the official files from berkeley.
Using the init-script provided in boinc wiki I've got no problems whatsoever.
I only had to install some gdk lib's to make it stop whining errors when I start up the manager.
Still, which libs are needed for the fancy display stuff? I get some MesaGlut error but the library is installed. (running 11.3 x64)
BTW, does anybody know how to get the CUDA stuff working with BOINC?
greetings

I don't remember exactly, but they were the -32bit versions of libraries I already had installed - maybe Mesa, freeglut, ...

I have CUDA running with Einstein@Home, but it still has some problems with preemption - lots of 'Computation Error' when it's running along side an active desktop.
AFAICT, there are very few BOINC/CUDA projects that will run on Linux
