Have loaded 11.4

I have a problem with my ICONs on the desktop, the ones I dragged a copy to the Window on Desktop for the most used applications have a big fat ? mark in the middle. When I click on them, the real icon shows up then goes back to a ? mark. Anybody else having this problem?

By the Way, the new 11.4 is so much faster on install and updating from the repositories. Much better on Installation and repository updates.!!!

Yes I saw this. I kept my old /home area from openSUSE 11.4 RC2, even though I did a clean install. I found I just had to go in and change the icon to something else or explicitly locate the icon file as a browse and then it would stick. The odd thing was that when selecting it (before trying to fix the icon display), you saw the old icon for just a flash. I presume this is a KDE issue of some sort and only for those of us that kept our old /home area or restored some data from a previous openSUSE version. Not all old icons are affected in this manner, just some of them.

Seems like most of my icons came back after the next boot without
reselecting them if I got the flash reaction.

It's possible that they might have come back if you had just logged out of the KDE session, then started a new KDE session.

I am seeing some flakiness in icons. Sometimes the speaker icon for sound does not appear. But if I hold the mouse where the icon should be, I can still get the sound controls.

I think that problem is repeatable. I have the task bar set to auto-hide. When I first login, if I hold the mouse over the task bar (making it visible) before the sound for login has been heard, then the sound icon seems to not show up. I see the other icons move to make space for it, but it doesn't show. If I stay away from the task bar until after I have heard the initial sound, all is well. It's probably a timing problem somewhere.

That could well be timing. One thing I did for a second install was to
disable ANY fancy video options for this old Nvidia card. If I don't use
both nomodeset and irqpolling, I get messed up video on a couple of machines
and those settings are pretty much required when booting the DVD for
installation. Once I set things up that way I have no problems with video
after installing the proprietary drivers an I can omit the irqpolling
parameter for significant improvement in speed.

As for the logoff/logon vs. reboot, I had to reboot anyway since the Nvidia
drivers never seem to work just right until I do.
