Thread: Repositories Order new Install

    Default Repositories Order new Install

I am new to openSUSE. Have few questions on repositories:

    1. What should be order of repositories? Can I change it using priority?

    1 | packman | packman | Yes | Yes | 99 |
    2 | Updates | Updates | Yes | Yes | 99 |
    3 | Non-oss | Non-oss | Yes | Yes | 99 |
    4 | Oss | Oss | Yes | Yes | 99 |
    5 | libdvdcss | libdvdcss | Yes | Yes | 99 |

    2. What is Security repository? Is it required?

    3. To add new repository like PACKMAN we should choose PACKMAN from menu or type URL and add?

a good place for you to read is here:
    http://forums.opensuse.org/english/g...ow-faq-forums/

for example, a really important concept to do with repos is in the
paragraph beginning with IMPORTANT in this posting:
    http://tinyurl.com/33qc9vu

    > 1. What should be order of repositories? Can I change it using
    > priority?

the order in which they are listed in YaST or zypper has no bearing on
    their priority...

and, changing the priority will have no bearing on in which order they
    are listed..

in the above cite (to read the IMPORTANT paragraph) all four of those
basic repos should be left at the priority of 99--at least until you
    understand more about openSUSE..

and, no new priority should have a priority higher than 99 (this will
sound strange but 75 is a higher priority than 99! in other words 1 is
    FIRST priority)

i recommend you disable repo number 5, and do not refresh it

and, do not refresh 3 or 4 (they are unchanging)

and, then you should be set for a while..

as (and if) you use "1-Click Installs" you will be asked if you wish
to keep the repos used enabled after the install, imo it is best to
say no.....and, after using a "1-Click Install" i always open Software
Repositories and make sure i have the basic four (oss, non-oss, update
    and packman) enabled, only.

    > 2. What is Security repository? Is it required?

not required in normal operation....a default install of openSUSE is
quite secure....just be SURE you have strong user and root passwords,
    and they should be different!

your list above shows you are already subscribed to packman!!

I just finished writing a how to for configuring your repositories for Opensuse 11.4. I tried to make it as explanatory as possible so everyone can understand it. Hopefully it helps.

i love folks with helpful attitudes...

but, maybe you would want to consider how to work in the very good
advice given in the new user section of these fora which is designed
to keep the system stable for new folks while they learn..

i'd like to see reference in your blog to the paragraph which begins
    with IMPORTANT in this link:
