So I logged into openSUSE 11.4 GNOME, I normally use KDE and in fact I found that in Nautilus 2.32.2.1 I was able to navigate to my movie folder, right click on the movie, pick Open With and select VLC movie player from the list and it worked. Next I resized Nautilus (with my movie collection shown) and VLC in a second window and drug a movie from Nautilus to VLC and sure enough, VLC started playing the move. So, I am not sure what is wrong however, we do not recommend that you install VLC from the videolan repository, but rather from Packman. There is only one file you can get from Videolan and that would be libdvdcss so as to be able to play DVD's. Once you have this one file, you should disable or remove the Videolan repository. You can add the following repository and replace VLC from Packman and see if it works better for you:
Code:
http://packman.inode.at/suse/openSUSE_11.4/
