Thread: 11.4 installation DVD not bootable

  1. #1

Default 11.4 installation DVD not bootable

I encountered a rather strange problem while trying to install 11.4 on my HP ProBook 4710s. I've successfully run 11.3 alongside Win 7 Pro and both installation DVDs still boot. The 11.4 installation DVD is ok and even boots on my more than 3 years old desktop PC. But on the ProBook, it freezes the startup screen and I can't even enter BIOS. According to HP support, it stops in POST stage and the LED blinking 5 times points to a problem with the main board. Any suggestions?

You can't enter the BIOS ? That is NOT an openSUSE installation DVD problem. The option to enter the BIOS is typically BEFORE the grub boot menu startup screen. Ergo - you have a hardware problem from what that reads.

    it freezes the startup screen
    I can't even enter BIOS
    Slightly confusing.

What start up screen? It sounds like you don't mean the DVD boot splash, but some HP info you see at boot? But the DVD activates post BIOS check, I think I'm correct in that.

Do other DVD's boot OK or have you tried the live CD

Get the main board looked at and/or replaced. HP has confirmed it's a
    hardware issue.

Firstly, thanks for the quick replies. Secondly, excuse my confusing wording: normally, I get the HP startup screen with an option to enter BIOS, followed by the GRUB menu, the DVD boot splash, or whatever. When I insert the 11.4 DVD, I'm stuck with a non-responsive HP startup screen. After ejecting the DVD I still can't enter BIOS, let alone boot from HDD.

This only occurs with the 11.4 installation DVD on the ProBook; other combinations work, i.e. the 11.3 installation DVD on the ProBook and the 11.4 installation DVD on the old desktop (without actual installation since it's 32bit, but that's hopefully not the point).

EDIT: sorry, overlooked your response; I just hope there are no warranty issues...

It seems I have the same problem as described in this thread.
    I have a HP Elitebook 6930p (64bit)

When I try to boot the opensuse 11.4 installation dvd, the computer
just "hangs" and I cannot enter BIOS.

OBS: I can still smoothly boot my old opensuse 11.3 dvd !

    BIG red flags!

someone who HAS this problem [nennes and pzathoth: that means one of
you, and the other needs to comment into the bug] needs to log a bug...

    reference this thread
    <http://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php?t=455416> and note that
more than one HP user (name the model numbers) is having the same
    problem with the same

    go: http://en.opensuse.org/Submitting_Bug_Reports

as always SEARCH for your problem in the 11.4 bugzilla database first,
and if the bug is already there ADD information as needed (like give
your machines make/model number and BIOS version)

you might also check the HP web site and see if you are using the
latest BIOS (as this REALLY sounds like a BIOS bug, and not a DVD problem)

when the bug number is known, please return it here so the next who
googles in with this problem knows where to add their bug comments..

    thanks!

I fill file a bug tomorrow.

You can still install 11.4, by using this workaround:
