it does not store them unless, and until you tell it to do that..

open YaST, go to Software Repositories, and down at the bottom, on the
left click to put a check in "Keep Downloaded Packages" then click
    "Ok"....now, where i puts'em i do not know..

someone else will have to tell you...or once you know the name of any
package downloaded and kept, just search for it...

In addition to hasan65 fine response on their location at /var/cache/zypp/packages/, you would also need to run YaST / Software / Software Repositories and check the option that says "Keep Downloaded Packages". Otherwise, they are removed after they have been installed.

jmr808, I just started YaST / Software / Software Repositories on both openSUSE versions 11.3 & 11.4 and it is there on the bottom left of the screen. You need to follow the instructions and look closer for this option.

As root, just type: zypper mr -kt

That will keep the packages you downloaded from all remote repositories.

When you add a repository, use the option -k or --keep-packages. This is a lowercase "k". The option -K (uppercase "K" or --no-keep-packages ) does the opposite. These options allow you to keep or delete packages from either some or all the repositories.
