I’ve got a Thinkpad 770 that I’d like to install openSuse onto. I am not planning to use KDE or GNOME on this machine, but one of the other simpler GUIs.
Is there an install CDROM available for machines that do not have DVD drives? Thanks.

How about the “network” CD. AFAIK the live CDs make life difficult if
you don’t want the GUI they use.

Give Linux Mint a try. Exists in 1 version (keep to release 9). Stay away
from Gnome, most other interfaces are very light.

There is the net Install DVD, you could use a USB stick instead or I think there is a PXE method. I’ve used the Net Install method and it works pretty well, but I have a slow internet connection so it does still take a while to do. The good thing is that you’ll only be installing the latest-and-greatest version.
These options will at least give you the choice of DE, whereas the live CDs will not initially.
Could also put together the distro in SUSE Studio and it may fit on a single CD.
