Smile Will Gnome 3 the KDE killer

    Well, everyone has an opinion.
The reason i am asking it, even though no one knows it for sure, is that it is very exciting to see some major leap on the Gnome desktop.
Gnome does look, to me, very dated. And if i am not totally wrong, there was no major overhaul in 8 years.

So the all new Gnome Shell will bring fresh wind on to the desktop.
I also read that Metacity will be gone and replaced by Mutter. Not sure if it really means Mutter as in german Mutter or Mother for the english folks, or something else.
    Anyway. There will some changes.
From what i read, it is not as dramatic as the move from KDE3 to KDE4, but still a significant change.

I really like to see Gnome Shell when it hits.

Now to my 'controversial' question. Will Gnome perhaps that good that people switch back from KDE to Gnome? Will you?

    Ok, lets have a discussion....

People used to switch back and forth all the time, be it KDE ←→ GNOME or → Fluxbox or → whatever. Usually a revamp triggers curiosity, so even die hard KDE-fanboys might take a look at the "new" GNOME (and even like it better than KDE), on the other hand this new version will most likely shoo away old GNOME users, who will switch over to something totally different.

Now, whether GNOME will "kill" KDE does not really sound like the right question for me. Both KDE and GNOME are open source products free of charge, so this can not be discussed in terms of "market share" or anything like it; an open source product is successful when there are people who contribute their ideas to it, who do all the tedious work of bugfixing, writing manuals and the like - its success most definitely does not depend on the number of people using it. Globally GNOME is already the most used Linux desktop environment, but that does not affect the development of KDE (or LXDE, Fluxbox etc.).

And now for something completely different...

We can all look forward to playing a new round of the "Poll: Which desktop do you prefer, Gnome 3 or KDE 4?" game. Mmm - can't wait.
