    Default KDE4.6 minor problems

    Hi,

A couple of little niggles seen with KDE4.6.

On 32bit install, (openSUSE11.3 was clean install)
-- reboot and shut down do nothing but hibernate and sleep are ok, can only powerdown with su privileges,
-- order of applications in plasma bar change after reboot.
Any suggestions, or is this an anomaly on this PC?

On 64bit install, (openSUSE11.3 was update of openSUSE11.2)
-- slow poweroff overcome with new user profile,
(no longer a problem with latest update)
-- inconsistent mouse curser theme, over desktop theme is Oxygen White, over application windows its DMZ
(resolved mouse cursor theme issue on 64bit install.
    -- /etc/sysconfig, parameter X_MOUSE_CURSOR="DMZ"
    -- and
    -- /usr/share/icons/default was a link to DMZ
    -- /usr/share/icons/default.kde4 was a link to oxygen
-- changed so that both were linked to DMZ
-- mouse cursor now consistent within windows and across desktop.
No niggles now wrt 64bit install.

You say a clean install, but there is much to do post install to get 4.6
It's possible that your issue is related to your particular hardware but does reboot and shutdown work on 11.3 before updating kde?

    Hi caf4926,

The original openSUSE11.3 was a new network install.
Over the last 3/4 months updates have been installed as they became available via the repos.
halt, poweroff and reboot work with kdesu.
With kde4.5.5 both 'Power Off' and 'Reboot' worked.

One HW change has been done since original install. The original HDD was copied over to a larger sata drive and then removed from the sytem. Since the change in HW this is the first glitch in three months.

Try creating a new user, login with it
    How does it behave?

    Hi caf4926,

With a new user profile its still the same.

Its not hardware, because from the GRUB screen, REBOOT and POWEROFF can be selected and they work.

Its only after kde4.6 is loaded the problem occurs.

If I boot from a USB-Device with openSUSE11.3 & KDE4.5.5 installed, there is also no problem.

I expect its something very simple in the X11 setup.

    Regards
    Michael

I'd be inclined to start a bug report on this. The guys can work you through a debug/solution.

I think if you post it a Novell and see
    https://bugzilla.novell.com/index.cgi
But I suspect they may just send you upstream to:

I had the same problem (openSUSE 11.3 32-bit upgraded from 4.5.5 to 4.6.0). I was unable to logout, reboot or shutdown using the menu after the upgrade. Only ctrl-alt-backspace worked. After googling, I found the problem could lie in a conflict caused by a "wrong" sound backend. I changed from Gstreamer to Xine as backend for Phonon and since then all is back to normal. That is, it works as expected.

    Hi mikaelw,

Thanks for the info. Its worked. I even have the kde startup jingle back

Both problems related to openSUSE 11.3 32-bit upgraded from 4.5.5 to 4.6.0, powering down and plasma application bar have disappeared.

I did a search in yast for gstream and deleted every item found not breaking dependencies.

    thanks again

How do you do this? I have the "no shutdown" problem and I also get an error on each reboot that my sound card is not working with a "fallback" to ... and its blank because it finds no other card. I fix the latter problem by going to yast, clicking the sound icon and playing a test sound. Easy, but annoying. I hope these problems are related and one action will fix both.

Have you tried going to Configure Desktop -> Multimedia -> Phonon -> Backend tab -> and click on Xine on the list and click prefer so it is at the top of the list? Then click apply. That should fix the sound "fallback" problem
