If you killed it did the PID change the next time you tried to do software
management? You may need to kill it again. Eventually (usually in a
minute or two) the application will finish what it's doing on its own and
then you can do whatever you're after without needing to kill things.

    Good luck.

Are you sure the process has been killed?

    Code:
    ps -p 5084
    Hiatt

Basic problem is that you can not have two processes updating the system at the same time. The Updater Applet may be running and trying to update the system. Best to wait a bit and let it finish it's task. This often happens at boot since one of the first things it does is check for updates. So wait a few minuets after booting to install new software to simply don't use the auto-update feature.

Also you must be root to kill an update process. Become root with

    su -

    command

    In gnome do this
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10573557/SUS...date-prefs.png

    reboot

    In kde
right click the updater applet in the tray > quit
It should ask if you want to start it at startup > say No

    reboot

In suse we use zypper not apt

    as su -

    zypper in <application>

    to update: zypper up
