Thread: 11.3 to 11.2 How to revert to old kde

    Default 11.3 to 11.2 How to revert to old kde

    I have given up on trying to change the resolution on my old server with 11.3 installed because there is no easy way in 11.3 to change to 1024 x 768 x 64K colours to accomodate the inadequate memory of the on board display adaptor so I have reinstalled 11.2 which had gui for controlling display resolution.

    I must keep my /home partition intact and therein, I suspect lies the problem because in the /home directory there are both .kde and .kde4 directories. Although immediately after installation of 11.2 (network install) kde 3.5 was running, after all the updates had run I ended up with kde 4.3.5 and therefore the same problem of not being able easily to change screen resolution.

    Is it possible to revert to earlier kde and how should I do this please?

    Another option I have still to try is to install a display adaptor card. The machine bios is supposed to turn off the integrated display controller if it detects one in a slot, but how do I get my operating system to find and install drivers for the new card?

    Regards,
    Budgie2

    If kde3 is installed you should be able to choose it from the kdm login screen (where you type your name and password before entering kde).
    Look at the bottom left, you have the desktop selection menu there.

    Hi and thanks for the reply. On this machine I have auto setup so no login screen appears. Is there another way to find this out?

    As root, open /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager with an editor and change

    Code:
    DEFAULT_WM="startkde"
    to

    Code:
    DEFAULT_WM="startkde3"

    begin a log out:

    - close all applications

    - right click on desktop

    - choose "Log out"

    - on the pop up instead of Shutdown, Hibernate, Restart or whatever,
    choose "End Current Session"

    - it will think and blink and then present you with the log on page,
    where in the bottom left corner click on "Session" (or something like
    that) and a list of possible session types are given, click on KDE3..

    - then log in again, as yourself

    now, KDE3 will be the default desktop environment until you go back
    and change it to something else (like above)..

    another way is to turn off auto log in and then you will see the
    session menu on every boot..
