Thread: No Gnome Desktop after upgrade from 10.1 to 11.3

Default No Gnome Desktop after upgrade from 10.1 to 11.3

After upgrading the distribution from 10.1 to 11.3 I was not able to start the GNome-Desktop. The first error message I received was "maximum number of x display failures reached". I figured out that there was a problem with the ATI Display driver. I guess I fixed this one now, since I do get a Login-Screen.

But after login, I only have a completely empty Desktop (no Icons, no Taskbar, etc.). Also Keyboard-Shortcuts don't work. I tried it with different user-logins, but always the same result.

Then I found information regarding gconftool-2 and the recursive -unset switch. Tried this one for /apps/panel and /apps/nautilus.

    But still no Desktop.

Below is some information from .xsession-errors, which I don't know how to resolve.

Try creating a new user account
You can do that from here
Boot to Level 3, then Yast and More....

See if you can login with that

FYI: 10.1 to 11.3 Upgrade - Not recommended - Expect issues

Thanks for the quick help, but it did not provide a different result. There is also only an empty Desktop shown after login. After a while the pops up an error message that the ScreenSaver gnome-screensaver-gl-helper crashed. But I cannot click on the Cancel button

Most likely an issue of upgrading from 10.1 to 11.3

I support ah7013's post. When you say
After upgrading the distribution from 10.1 to 11.3
that can mean a lot of things. And you do not explain anything there as if you think there is only one obvious way to do this. Let me assure you that we have seen here several approaches of which not all were that obvious to many of us.

The best thing to do is a fresh install of 11.3 while keeping the /home part of your system (which is of course easy when it is on a sperate partition) and of course keping/saving other important data like databases when you have them. Also a general backup (were it only to later compare configuration files old and new when encountering problems) is allways a usefull thing.

I would recommend a fresh install as well (make sure you backup first)

While you say so, must I come to the conclusion that you didn't so going from 10.1 to 11.3? I asked (well, indirectly), but am still curious to know what you did "upgrading the distribution from 10.1 to 11.3".

Well, i downloaded 11.3 from Official site, crated DVD and started installation Process (selecting Upgrade currend Installation)

That's it. I did this earlier with other releases as well without any issues.
