Before you press enter in the Grub OS selector menu, enter the kernel load option command nomodeset and then press enter. Anytime you upgrade a kernel, it is best to look at your at your grub menu.lst file (/boot/grub/menu.lst) as root to determine if kernel load options need to be added (look at your original load line as it may have been there, but did not get copied over to the new kernel). Also, if you have loaded the nVidia proprietary video driver, it must be reloaded in order for it to work in the new kernel. Last, if nothing else works, in addition to nomodeset or in place of it, try the option 3, to switch to runlevel 3 and not load your desktop. This would allow you to at least have a terminal session to try and fix things. Hopefully, you did not get rid of your old kernel or you could be in trouble.

Also if you use the NVIDIA driver you may need to reinstall it.

Yeah, that's a kernel panic. You probably want to boot to your old kernel and start over. I know that you can specify the kernel in the grub command environment and I'm pretty sure you have a backup of the old kernel in the /boot directory of your file system. It should have been created when you installed the new kernel. Hopefully some of the more experienced folks around here have more details for you.

No problem have images of my system.
The system is still working normally I use the pae kernel.
I just installed with yast kernel -rt then rebooted the system and choose rt in the bootmenu.

So, when you installed the new kernel, did you leave an old one to use should the new one not work? The kernel load option 3, basically tells the kernel as it is loading to stop at runlevel 3 and to not load the Desktop X server. Again, as you select the kernel to load in your grub menu.lst file, you enter just the single number "3", with no quotes and press enter. If you can get to the terminal prompt, you have an option to run the terminal version of YaST. If you did not keep a running kernel and can not get to runlevel 3, then you must reload openSUSE. Here is something you might find helpful.

Both kernels are 32 bit right? ie you did not install a 32 bit kernel on a 64 bit system. Just checking

Yes both kernels are 32 bit.
Actually it is installed on a 64 bits system for using vst plugins with wine.
But I use instead of VST plugins now LV2
    I will do a new opensuse 11.3 64-bit installation.
