    Default poor graphics quality of applets with firefox/icedtea under suse 11.3

    I have recently switched from suse 9.2 32-bit to 11.3 64-bit (luckily I'm still mantaining the old machien for a while).

    I'm noticing that the graphics quality of the applets displayed by the new firefox (3.6.12 bundled with the opensuse distro) is significantly worse (mainly concerning fonts which look very poor) then the one I used to have on the old system.

    I see that the new firefox uses IcedTea 1.9.2. The old system was using, I guess, something called libjavaplugin_oji.

    Is this a known problem with IcedTea and is there a recommended replacenent ?

    Icedtea is part of a compatable set of java replacements. It is suggested that you stick with sun java and remove the Icedtea versions. Here is a check to see what you have installed you can compare to my system:

    Code:
    14. Show if Java Packages are Installed from openSUSE ...

    Command: rpm --query --all --queryformat '%{NAME}-%{VERSION}-%{RELEASE}-%{ARCH} -> %{VENDOR}\n' '*java-*'

    java-1_6_0-sun-1.6.0.u22-1.2.1-x86_64 -> openSUSE
    java-1_6_0-sun-alsa-1.6.0.u22-1.2.1-x86_64 -> openSUSE
    java-1_6_0-sun-plugin-1.6.0.u22-1.2.1-x86_64 -> openSUSE
    java-1_6_0-sun-devel-1.6.0.u22-1.2.1-x86_64 -> openSUSE

    You should expect to have only Sun Java Packages installed. If your files
    include the name --> openjdk <--, it is suggested that they be uninstalled.

    Press <enter> to continue...
    This is test 14 from my script file mmcheck you can get Here Message #40 has the most recent version. I uninstalled all of the non-sun versions of Java. As to Fonts, these are easy to change. I decided to use a font from my Windows Font file, so consider updating your system fonts.

    I did the above and that solved the applet problem, but triggered a new problem with openoffice which is listed in a new post
