Thread: Virtual Box driver error

  1. #1

    Question Virtual Box driver error

I installed Oracle VM virtual box from software installler.I want to run windows xp on it.
But Im getting following error whenever i click on start(note : I havent installed xp just created the vdi.):

    First window: (VirtualBox - Error):
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine WindowsXP.
The virtual machine 'WindowsXP' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1.

    Details:

    Result Code:
    NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
    Component:
    Machine
    Interface:
    IMachine {6d9212cb-a5c0-48b7-bbc1-3fa2ba2ee6d2}

Second window (VirtualBox - Error in sublibOsInit):
    Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)

The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing

    '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'

as root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary.

and in the end Bug Buddy reports error.I saved the report file but where should i post it.(Provide link if possible)

    Please help me out.
    Thanks in advance.

Do you have kernel-source and kernel-syms, of the exact same version as your kernel, installed ?

This is the OSE version, you'll have to wait until the package is updated, or better uninstall it and install the PUEL version download here:

The EXACT same problem, or a slightly different problem ?

I installed PUEL version but no luck again.I’m getting same error messages.
I think problem is not with the version.

Is there any good alternative to virtual box?

    thanks for all replies.

Note one also has to change a user's permissions in order to use Virtual Box. That is clearly specified in the Virtual Box documentation. After changing one's permissionss (adding a user to VBOXUSER (or VBOXUSERS - I can't remember which) group) it is necessary to log OUT of Linux and then log back in Linux (not I say 'Linux' and not the desktop).

Note after installing the same version of kernel-source and kernel syms as your kernel, you need to rerun:
    Code:
    /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
