    Default Bookmarks in firefox

    Hi,

How can I know where I have put a bookmark in FF?

I mean, I know how to search for a bookmark, using the search function. The
problem is, once found, it doesn't tell me in which folder of bookmarks it
is. Without knowing it, I can't add another bookmark to the same folder, or
move it to another folder, etc.

When I Bookmark Page or use Ctrl-D, it pops up a menu asking me where I want to put it. By default it goes into the Unsorted bookmarks but I can put it in other folders instead. Did you not get this popup?

You can still Organize bookmarks. Most likely your recent bookmarks are in the Unsorted bookmarks pile.

Obviously. Years ago, when I did that bookmark.

    The problem is finding where.

    I explain again.

I have many bookmarks, sorted in many folders. Sometimes I know I have
bookmarked a site, but I don't remember where. So I go to "Organize
bookmarks", and in the search box I enter a word I know it is in the
    bookmark - for instance, "maps".

    I find it.

Lets say it is "google maps".

Know, how do I know on which folder of the entire bookmark hierarchy it is?

The only fields displayed are name, location, tags.

It shows in "all bookmarks". I want to see it in the proper folder where I
    stored it.

There doesn't appear to be any way except to expand the hierarchy and look for it there. Perhaps you can find an addon that will show you the bookmark in context. Or file it with Mozilla as a requested feature.

You can however cut it out without knowing where it came from and paste it where you want it. But you lose it if you fail to paste it.

    That's what I think.

Currently they are stored, I think, in "places.sqlite". Previously (2008)
    they used "bookmarks.html"

Then perhaps we need something to view the inside of the sqlite database :-?

Except by expanding the hierarchy and doing a brute force search by eye there.

Yes, that's what I do. But it is time consuming.

A search on the FF addons pages showed at least one addon that could sync bookmarks to your local server by ftp or webdav. But the serialisation format (JSON or XBEL, whatever that is) may not be more friendly to edit.

You probably have a case for asking FF to at least display the folder where a bookmark was found in the list of properties.

I agree, this is an area of function that could be improved.
