Default how to update through the terminal?

hello, I was wondering how I can update in the terminal. In Ubuntu I was used to do this with sudo apt-get update, but I guess it is different in OpenSUSE. Can anyone help me with this?

    Thanks in advance, Frank

You do it by typing zypper update or zypper up.

zypper patch for (necessary) security patches
    zypper update for installed packages

if you're sure you have the correct repos enabled, updating openSUSE is as
easy as ubuntu, takes even less keystrokes:
    Code:
     zypper up
    from a root terminal.

you can also use the 'zypper' command to list or change your enabled
repos. all that's nicely explained in zypper's manual page, which you find
    at "man zypper".

what's the advantage of calling 'zypper ref' separately? for me, every
'zypper up' checks if repos have been changed, and refreshes them if yes
    -- and i'm sure i didn't change any of zypper's default behavior.

And to add to all the good advice on how to use zypper, you can also use YaST from the terminal
    Code:
    yast
and thus get all the niceties YaST offers. In the case of software management the direct usage of zypper might be easier, but the other YaST functions on a terminal is not a bad option.

See man yast. Apart from the ncurses interface (which more or less mimics the GUI) there are also some strict CLI possibilities. Sometimes these can be used in scripts to advantage.

None that I know - except if you think they are not refreshed, or if you
    disabled auto refresh.
