Default rtl8187 Opensuse 11.3 connectivity issues

I have done a fresh install of the OS and I am having wifi trouble. I am failing in connecting to an access point that Windows works fine with on the same machine. As far as I can tell it is connecting but not getting an IP address via DHCP. when running ifup it says its backgrounding getting an ip address. Any help would be appreciated.. thanks

terracide, if your security key were wrong, you would see this type of thing occur. But, if your driver were wrong, perhaps it would do the same thing. The norm for wireless is to have load the NetworkManager and then use an app like Kwallet, if you use KDE, to maintain your security key. I suggest you tell us more about your hardware setup so that we might determine if you are loading the correct driver. I have a script that can get a lot of information about your setup you could post here. Message #11 has the most recent netinfo script. Message #23 contains another little program called blip, useful after you are on the internet.

Have you updated the fresh install of 11.3? If not, you are hitting one or both
of the bugs on the distribution media.

Please post the output of the following commands:

    Code:
    /usr/sbin/iwconfig
    cat /etc/resolv.conf
    sudo /sbin/route -n
The last one will require your root password. It will not echo anything when typed.

Do NOT run as root unless you are specifically asked to do so. You just posted
your security key in a public forum - the whole world might know how to get on
    your network, but probably not.

The bottom line is that you have not authenticated or connected to the AP. There
    is no DHCP until connection.

Is your encryption WEP or WPA/WPA2? If WEP, you must use the hex key, not a
passphrase. You should be able to get the key by logging into your AP. Windows
is OK with the passphrase, but the "standard" allows two ways to convert the
phrase to a key. Linux uses the other one.

The rest of your output is irrelevant.

terracide, that makes two of us living in Austin. What was that security code again that you are using and what was the name of your network? How strong is your signal there?

Now really, we don't need any security codes or network names, but your issue seems to be related to not having the right code as lwfinger has suggested. Or, the right code is not going in correctly for some reason.
