openSUSE 11.3 64bit and Java problem

In openSUSE 11.3 64bit java apps don’t work.

This is what I have installed:
java-1_5_0-gcj-compat-32bit
java-1_6_0-sun
java-1_6_0-sun-alsa
java-1_6_0-sun-devel
java-1_6_0-sun-plugin

When I go to the java site to check java it says I’m up to date, so everything seems fine, but many apps that I use do not work. The java logo appears, it shows the loading bar and then it shows an empty box.

It used to work perfectly in openSUSE 11.2, but I recently upgraded to 11.3 and now it does not work.

I need this for my college and for work, so please help. I am stuck!

just in case all the java 1.6 are version 1.6.0.u22-1.2.1, and the 1.5 is 1.5.0.0-125.4, and my firefox is 3.6

The website I am trying that does not work is this one

Forex @ DailyFX - PowerCharts from DailyFX | Forex Charts

I see this
http://thumbnails21.imagebam.com/10460/d83cf3104590564.jpg](http://www.imagebam.com/image/d83cf3104590564)

This is what I get if I run firefox from console.

fcj@linux-fcj:~> firefox
*** nss-shared-helper: Shared database disabled (set NSS_USE_SHARED_DB to enable).
*** NSPlugin Viewer  *** WARNING: unhandled variable 18 (<unknown variable>) in NPN_GetValue()
*** NSPlugin Viewer  *** WARNING: unhandled variable 18 (<unknown variable>) in NPN_GetValue()

I see it works for you, do you use 64bit as well?

I also visited the web site and it worked just fine for me. Here are the Java files I have loaded.

java-1_6_0-sun-1.6.0.u22-1.2.1-x86_64 -> openSUSE
java-1_6_0-sun-alsa-1.6.0.u22-1.2.1-x86_64 -> openSUSE
java-1_6_0-sun-plugin-1.6.0.u22-1.2.1-x86_64 -> openSUSE

Thank You,

Yes _64

java-ca-certificates-1-5.3.noarch
java-1_6_0-sun-1.6.0.u22-1.2.1.x86_64
java-1_6_0-sun-plugin-1.6.0.u22-1.2.1.x86_64
timezone-java-2010l-0.3.1.noarch

no luck here. I uninstalled all the extra stuff leaving only this:

java-1_6_0-sun-1.6.0.u22-1.2.1-x86_64
java-1_6_0-sun-alsa-1.6.0.u22-1.2.1-x86_64
java-1_6_0-sun-plugin-1.6.0.u22-1.2.1-x86_64

same problem continues. any more ideas?

I know it might seems strange
But did you do the multi-media guide
Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide
Not sure if there is any relation to your issue (just a hunch from looking at the source)
I use gecko-mediaplayer too from RedDwarf

Also FYI I tried in Chrome and it works there too

Just tried that, and no luck!
by the way, I am using KDE

Indeed
KDE here too.

Do you have chrome?
From this repo:
http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/rpm/stable/x86_64

Some things to try / consider:

  • New FFox profile
  • Other browsers
  • Disable desktop effects

Chrome also gives me this

*** NSPlugin Viewer  *** WARNING: unhandled variable 18 (<unknown variable>) in NPN_GetValue()
*** NSPlugin Viewer  *** WARNING: unhandled variable 18 (<unknown variable>) in NPN_GetValue()

I also disabled desktop effects and problem persists!

When the java app goes blank I can access the java console. These are the results.

Dude, you have so many repos!?

You claim to have followed my multi-media guide. But from that repo list I can tell you didn’t follow it very carefully.

Here is what I think: If you re-installed, completely fresh, using just 4 or 5 main repos and follow the multi-media - It would work

As a matter of fact I followed every single step. Most of the results from each command, came with results “nothing to do” since I already had most programs and codecs installed. Only the pakman repo I deleted after the install, since I already had it with a different name.
With that being said, which repos do you suggest I should eliminate?

Particularly I had in mind the VideoLan repo. It needs removing. Though I don’t think it’s likely the direct cause of your problem.

What I was wondering about this whilst I was out this morning, was, did this java ever work OK?
