Thread: KDE 4, hunspell and universal spell checking

    Default KDE 4, hunspell and universal spell checking

    Hi all.

    Please help me with this anoying spell check "helper".
    I've installed openSUSE 11.3 and KDE 4 and updated the latest patches.
    When I start firefox and thunderbird a spell checker activates which is active in all windows (including shell). I have removed all spell checkers (aspell, ispell, hunspell) then rebooted and the spell checker was gone. But now I wasn't able to start firefox and thunderbird because they seem to use it. I have installed again hunspell. The "helping" spell checker was there again :-))

    In the spell checking section of kde system settings I'm not able to find an option to disable this "helper".

    I would recommend checking the following area:

    1. Navigate to System Settings --> Locale
    2. Click on ABC Spell Checker
    3. Uncheck the Option settings "Automatic spell checking enabled by default"
    4. Click on the Apply button

    Cheers!

    :-)))

    I did.
    I also did tons of other things like editing .kde4/share/config/sonnetrc
    [Spelling]
    backgroundCheckerEnabled=false
    checkUppercase=false
    checkerEnabledByDefault=false
    defaultClient=sdfsdf
    defaultLanguage=en_CA
    skipRunTogether=true

    etc.

    But nothing helps.
    This is a nasty software I'm telling you.

    Why do you want spell check disabled in Firefox and Thunderbird?

    Also, can you provide a screenshot of what it looks like for us to review?

    On another note. I would recommend installing the add-on MR. It makes it easier accessing the various about:config, about:plugins and much much more.

    This includes using the Chrome Editor repairing the Extensions and Themes list!!

    I have to agree with gogalthorp. I can't live without the spell checker also.

    Hi.

    Thanks for your answers.
    I love spell checking but when I can turn it on or off.
    In this case it doesn't care about my opinion ;-)
    When I first installed opensuse on my laptop there was a small tool that popped up when the spell checker switched on.
    But I disabled it and now I can't see it anymore.

    I'm not sure how to attach the screenshot but here is a link: http://my-dev.becolor.eu/images/www/Temp/snapshot1.png
    The nasty thing is that when I'm typing my root password it becomes visible and the spell checker is checking it :-)))

    Bash provides a number of shell options, settings that you can change to modify the shell’s behavior.

    Type "shopt" (without the quotes) to check what is on or off in your shell such as the interactive spell checker.

    Some interactive spellcheckers

    aspell
    buildhash
    findaffix
    icombine
    ijoin
    ispell

    Good Luck!

    Finally got it :-)))

    Suse installed chinees simplified package (scim) automatically for me.
    It seems that kde is starting it automatically and it is somehow activated with a combination of keys.

    Suse should remove this if the installation is not in china or japan.
    I guess some dependancy is adding it in the installation.

    Regards.
