    Default tracker-store - can I live without it?

    I've noticed tracker-store burning CPU and thrashing disk when I login to a KDE session. I'm tempted to disable it by modifying /etc/xdg/autostart/tracker-store.desktop

    But before I do that, what added value does it bring to the party? It seems like it's mainly involved with desktop indexing, which I never use (does anyone?).

    I could not figure out just what Tracker Added. I did determine you can place an icon in the icon tray which gives you the ability to suspect indexing, but in the end, I just uninstalled Tracker and nothing seems to be amiss at all.

    After a bit of exploring I've now changed all user's ~/.config/tracker/tracker-miner-fs.cfg

    When I played with the Throttle setting in this file and saved the edits, the tracker-store picked up the change in the config and re-indexed immediately - thrashing the system quite a bit. So that wasn't much help. I edited it again and disabled monitors and emptied the list of directories to index. On saving got no activity, so I think this will do for now.

    EnableMonitors=false
    IndexRecursiveDirectories=
    IndexSingleDirectories=

    Hopefully by changing things in /home, tracker will stay disabled across OS installs and upgrades.

    Nope, the above change made no difference this morning when I logged in. And none of the tracker-gui settings seem to make any difference either. I've now followed jdmcdaniel3's advice and removed tracker and anything dependent on it. That's done the trick.

    mchnz, I think that it is just as well that you uninstalled the program. You can always get it back if someone tells what we are missing, but until then, good riddance to Tracker.

    I just de-installed Tracker, and quite frankly my laptop reacted even worse after that. Could someone tell me what it actually does beside eating up the CPU? And why it does nothing on some days and then turns itself on for another handful of days.

    Hi
    Look at the man page for tracker-store, the description is pretty self
    explanatory. You can always run the command pstree to see what is using
    it.

    You have to be careful with what you uninstall. You need only remove the
    "crawler" part, not the libraries that are used by other programs, which
    then break.
