Thread: Mounting removable device without having to open it in Dolphin?

Question Mounting removable device without having to open it in Dolphin?

    Hi!

Every time when I mount a usb device (e.g. mp3 player), first I have to click on the device notifier icon in the bottom right corner and choose "Open with File Manager" in order for it to get mounted. Where can I change this? I would like the device to be immediately mounted in /media/whatever when I attach it without having to open the file manager (Dolphin).

Where can I set it up? The only settings I found regarding this are in KDE menu / configure desktop / advanced / removable devices ==> there I checked the (previously unchecked) option "Enable automatic mounting of removable media", unchecked "Only automount media that has been previously been manually mounted", left the other two options ("Mount all removable media at login" and "Automatically mount removable media when attached"). Still, no change, even after a restart.

So where else can I set it up?

    Op.system: Suse 11.3, KDE 4.4.4

    Thanks,
    Agoston

As far as I can tell, you have perhaps four mounting options.

    1. Leave it plugged all of the time and add it to your fstab file.
    2. Ignore the device notifier and issue a mount command at the terminal prompt, where you can decide a different location for it to be mounted. A script file could be written to do this, but it would still be a manual run command.
    3. Continue using your present method.
    4. Any other mounting options would depend on the music player in openSUSE that you are using.

Under device notifier settings there is an option to select a particular device, which has been previously mounted, and set it to 'Automount on Attach'.

It's a shame there is no good solution to this problem. There's something nice about being able to simply put in a CD or USB drive and automatically have it accessible to any program. That's how things HAVE been working for the past 5 years or so.

I found this, which provides a download for a Plasmoid widget called Device Manager - which is like Device Notifier but the Automount option actually works.
