Thread: Dolphin Crashing on PNG Preview

Default Dolphin Crashing on PNG Preview

    Hi,

Dolphin crashes when previewing PNG files - with other image files (PS, PDF, JPG, DVI) when you roll the mouse over the file you get a preview pic in the top right corner - when I roll it over a PNG file, it halts for a second then crashes - I get the following crash output (when running dolphin from a terminal)

    Code:
kDebugStream called after destruction (from void KDirWatchPrivate::removeEntry(KDirWatch*, KDirWatchPrivate::Entry*, KDirWatchPrivate::Entry*) file /usr/src/packages/BUILD/kdelibs-4.4.4/kio/kio/kdirwatch.cpp line 950)
    Cancelled INotify (fd 11, 1) for "/home/funkymuppet/.local/share"
Can anyone give me any pointers? I've searched for a solution but can't find anything.

    Thanks,

    JW

Here are my numbers, so you need to tell us more about your setup using yours:

    Code:
    1. OpenSUSE Version # : 11.3
    2. 32 or 64 bit system : 64 bit
    3. KDE verion # : 4.4.4
    4. Dolphin Version : 1.4
    5. Graphics Card : nVidia 9800 GT
    6: Graphics 3D Driver : nVidia 256.53
You can get most of this from your My Computer icon. Now when I had previously upgraded to KDE 4.5, I started having all kinds of issues with Dolphin as well, but no problems with the base openSUSE KDE release since I dropped back down to it.

    Hi - thanks
This is what I have from the My Computer icon:
    Code:
    OS: Linux 2.6.34.4-0.1-desktop x86_64
      System: openSUSE 11.3 (x86_64)
      KDE: 4.4.4 (KDE 4.4.4) "release 3"
      Display Info
    Vendor: nVidia Corporation
      Model: GeForce 8800 GTS 512
      2D driver: nvidia
      3D driver: NVIDIA 256.53
And - yes - I did try to do KDE 4.5 (t solve digikam issue) but it all seemed to go a bit funny, so reverted back. I managed to do that by removing the 4.5 repos and adding 4.4.4 and then doing a zypper dup - that seemed to sort everything, and now this dolphin thing is the only bit left...
When I check dolphin in YaST I get version 4.4.4-3.6
Is there a log I can check somewhere that would help?
    Sincere thanks,
    JW

funkymuppet I hate to tell you any bad news, but in my case, I ended up reinstalling openSUSE 11.3 to get back to normal. I do maintain a separate /home area and I did not reformat it. So, I did not lose any personnel data, but I am suggesting you might need to consider taking this approach.

    Thank You,
That's okay - not too bothered if that's the solution - I have all my personal files in /home as well.
I'm assuming I do this through the original x64 DVD - is there a specific selection to make from the menus, or checkboxes to uncheck etc. etc.? I can look out for the checkbox that disables the formatting - but do I just select "installation" or similar?
    Many thanks,
    JW

Well I guess that proves it is a system problem not a user configuration, but root is not a good choice. 1) you can accidentally damage your system by logging into a GUI as root. 2) root is special and may not act like a regular user. My suggestion was to create a new regular user account in order to test if the problem was configuration file related. Each user has their own configuration files for the GUI and mot other things as well.

Ended up reinstalling bottom up as found I really needed dual-boot with Win 7 - but now experiencing flawless Dolphin operation! very satisfying.
Not going to mess with base KDE version again...

I would say I agree with you funkymuppet. KDE 4.4.4 works just fine for me. We will not escape the upgrade forever, but perhaps the problems will be fixed before we are forced to upgrade our KDE version to 4.5.
