Default Complete mess after update from 11.2 to 11.3

Hi there! It looks like an update from 11.2 to 11.3 has gone badly on my laptop. I followed the command line instructions at SDB:System upgrade - openSUSE

As well as the problem identified in window title, minimize, maximize and close buttons are gone! I have the following issues:

    1. Can't switch tasks using alt-tab or clicking on the task bar or right clicking and clicking 'maximize'.

    2. Applets not accepting keyboard input, so can't get into Yast which requires a password

    3. Only one desktop - can't reconfigure to 4

    4. Can't use konsole but thankfully xterm is available, albeit in a tiny window that is impossible to resize.

    5. Kickoff launcher gets tangled up and all the menus are incorrectly overlapping rendering it useless. Ok once configured back to Classic Menu Style

    6. Kmail appears to have lost all my email - or rather it has probably lost its settings. That's the least of my problems right now.

My machine has been rock solid on 11.2 for months so something has gone drastically wrong but I don't know what.

    I'm on KDE4.4

    Any help gratefully received.

First thing I'd try is renaming the .kde4 directory bringing the desktop back to default. Do this from the terminal NOT the GUI. Changing tires when you are driving the car is not a good idea. Note your kmail data will also be in this directory so preserve it. If you want to test before renaming create a new user and see if the problem is also in the new user account

Second I'd check the video ie if you have used a proprietary driver in the past be sure it is reinstalled for the new OS. Let us know what you got.

    Thanks for the reply.

I've created a new user, and I renamed the .kde4 directory of my normal user, and both accounts are still exhibiting the same problems.

The video drivers are not proprietary so I don't need to pursue that avenue.

OK - It looks a complete balls up but I see you only have these enabled

    Code:
    19 | repo-11.3-non-oss | opensuse-11.3 Non-OSS | Yes | No | 99 | yast2 | http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.3//repo/non-oss/ |
    20 | repo-11.3-oss | opensuse-11.3 OSS | Yes | No | 99 | yast2 | http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.3//repo/oss/ |
    21 | repo-11.3-update | opensuse-11.3 Updates | Yes | No | 99 | rpm-md | http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.3 |
You should make Updates Yes | Yes

Are we to assume you have moved from 11.1 to 11.2 and now to 11.3?

IMO that is not good. Is there any reason why you didn't just do a new install?

Yes, correct assumption - I have gone from 11.1 to 11.2 to 11.3. I have a development environment on the system that took an eternity to set up and I did not want to go to the trouble of a fresh start with it. Not sure I agree with your opinion that updating twice is not good - if openSUSE cannot do that then it really does have issues.

But speaking of which, setting updates to yes/yes doesn't fix it.

I'm half tempted to try a KDE update to 4.5 to see if that eliminates the issue. What do you reckon?

Your symptoms sound rather like you have compiz enabled in the default applications > window manager

Where you should be using kde's kwin
You know that compiz was dropped from kde installs and kde-pure maintains that, but I expect you have compiz installed. But a new user account should default to kwin and resolve such, as would a new .kde4
As far as I know, there are no issues in the default kde of 11.3 that should require you to update to 4.5

I certainly was using compiz - any ideas how I can check its existence, and then if it is there, how I can remove?

Actually having it installed is not an issue.
It's using it in kde that's problematic. I actually had my gnome desktop displaying in kde last week because I was messing with settings to test something.
If you have a gnome login too, make sure effects if OFF there, then if you want effects in KDE use kwin and if kde is going to be your main desktop, make sure to be using the kde login manager. A kde login screen looks like this:

The settings for this are here:
