Thread: "Root logins not allowed!"

  1. #1

    Default "Root logins not allowed!"

Got this message when trying to login as root on a machine running 11.2. I
see it has also appeared on another machine running 11.2. So far, 11.3 is
free of this malady. I sincerely hope this is a bug and not a feature.

A bit more information is probably in order. Is this a new system? Can
you duplicate this? What does your /etc/passwd entry for 'root' look
like? What has been setup on this system since its initial install that
could affect logins? What do you see in /var/log/messages from the time
    period of the failed login?

    Good luck.

my asking the OP to post a bug was based on Carlos' suggestion in this
thread in the applications forum (where another user found root log in
blocked after some unspecified recent update) :

Ah... I see. Interesting to hear about I suppose. Thanks for the update.

    Good luck.

in addition to mentioning your DE/version number (if used), you might
just mention what you are trying to log into as root:

    -into YaST
-into some other GUI app (like File Manager as superuser)
    -full screen terminal console
    -using kdesu
    -using gnomesu
    -using "su"
    -using "su -"
    -gui konsole in KDE
    -gui console in Gnome
    -into KDE itself
    -into Gnome itself
-into some other Desktop Environment itself
-and maybe some other opportunities i don't suddenly think of

and, you might mention that it began immediately after an update on or
    about some date certain.

I just tested it. 11.2, could log in as root just fine. I'm dissapointed, though: I expected that
cute background full of bombs and yellow triangles on a red background :-(

Same as the OP did not specify needed details, I won't >:-P

I'm with you on that. It went missing a few releases ago. In lieu of that, I
always set my root background to red, usually shading towards black at the
top of the screen. Makes for a rather threatening aspect slightly suggestive
    of Mordor.

Sorry about that. I always moaned about lack of info from my customers when
I was looking after interactive systems thirty years ago and now I keep
making the same mistake. I'll blame it on senior moments for now.

Problem is associated with latest upgrade to KDE 4.5.1 - no matter whether
    factory or new stable repo.

It needs a dark volcano :-)

Ah. No, I'm using gnome, with gdm login manager, and only mandatory updates. Not your case.
