Thread: graphical root login no longer allowed after update from KDE 4.5.0 to KDE 4.5.1

For people who use winbind for login, and set the computer up that way during the installation, by default there is no other local user besides root. In that case, when winbind has a problem then there is no alternative but to login as root to fix the problem, no other user is available.

then, imho, either no one should use winbind and set up openSUSE that
way during install, *or* the Linux machine should perform only server
functions, and therefor never need to run X (what server function
    needs X-windows anyway? [answer: None])..

Thanks for all the stuff here.

My problem was that I wanted to install GooleEarth, I can't do that as a user because it then can't find libraries it needs. I can't do it with su or sudo because it demands that the user installing it has an x-session running, so it needs the root logged into a GUI to install.

I did it by logging in to a text shell, then running startx and then twm, but I hate twm.

Now I can log in to KDE as root again for jobs such as this, they are probably very rare, but it should have been easier.

hog wash! i have been using GoogleEarth for _years_ and had no trouble
with it not finding the libraries it needs...and, i didn't have to log
into KDE as root to make that happen.

Something's wonky. When I installed it, I downloaded it, did an 'su -',
made the .bin file executable, then ran it. After it ran and was
installed I exit from root, and ran googleearth as myself. Worked fine.
If you try to run it as root after you install it, it will barf.
Install as root, exit, and run as normal user. Easy peasy...

I just had to chime in on this discussion. Answer the man's question and give him a stern warning instead of all the rude commentary. It's not as if he cannot toggle back to his original security settings once finished.

I did not realize that there are self- appointed Linux police out there.

-=welcome=- to the forum three weeks ago!

and thank you for your opinion on the best way to help those new folks
    in need..

and noting you are a retired Unix Admin, please go ahead and give the
man your answer and stern warning so the rest of us can learn from
    your example..

I'm arriving too late to this discussion. Sorry if this has already been said.
Probably you already know, but you can login again in GUI as root in kde 4.6. At least I can. Even if I agree with those that advice others to be careful and not to do it unnecessarily.
