Compiz Segfaults (post 2.6.34.4-0.1)

After smooth update to kernal 2.6.34.4-0.1, I noticed some “segfaults” in the logs.

Since I had experienced some minor problems prior, I then switched the Window manager from Compiz to KWin. All seemed fine once again. When attempting to switch back to Compiz, I received the message(s) that

the new window manager failed to start, reverting

The logs showed:

I suspect that Compiz and my Intel 855GM are no longer in harmony, although I must note that the previous problems with the 855GM seem to be resolved!

Config: Gateway MX7340, 1GB, Intel 855GM, WD 250GB
OpenSUSE: 11.3, KDE 4.5.1 (and Gnome)

Note: KWin is running quite satisfactorily, and all desktop effects (except “blur”) function as spec’d. Prior to kernel update, Compiz and desktop effects did NOT “play well together”.

Hi,

How did you install Compiz?

Also are you running 64-bit or 32-bit? The first segfaults refer to npviewer.bin which is was usually allows 64-bit openSUSE to run the 32-bit flash program.

Take Care,

Ian

I have also issues using KDE4 and compiz after kernel-update to version 2.6.34.4-0.1.

When typing there seem to be delays in keyboard-response and single characters are even omitted. Very annoying.

Downgrade to an earlier kernel-version solves the problem.

So there is definitely a problem with version 2.6.34.4-0.1 !!!

32-bit. I did not install Compiz, I found the setting(s) in my OOTB 11.3 & KDE 4.5.1 environment. Window Manager was already set to “Compiz” (in Configure Desktop). I changed it to KWin, all was well, then attempts to change back yielded the OP messages.

Since Window Manager was already set to “Compiz”, I assumed (I know, the source of most problems!) that Compiz was installed with 11.3 and/or KDE (from 4.4.4 –> 4.5.1).

I forgot to mention that I am working on an Intel Core Duo 6750 (OpenSuse x64) and and the graphics controller is a nvidia 8xxx chip … so it’s not necessarily a platform problem that you have …

I don’t believe compiz comes preinstalled with KDE. I know it does with gnome if you installed gnome first and then kde then you would also have compiz installed. Otherwise the only other segfault problems I’ve seen were from the old XGL repository. You can try updating your compiz to the latest one, although there are no emerald packages anymore, I outline how to do it in my how-to guide HERE

I installed with my desktop (hardware/software in my sig).

Take Care,

Ian

I did the openSUSE 11.3 install with Gnome (I always have liked, and used to prefer Gnome  ). I added KDE from the DVD (4.4.4), upgraded KDE through 4.4.93, 4.5.0 ( :X ), and finally, 4.5.1 ( ). Gnome shows Compiz, and it is totally accessible. It is only in KDE that the switching problem has occurred.

I have linked to your guide, and will attempt re-install. For now, KWin is providing yeoman duty well.

Thank you for the replies.

(Apologies for replying to mine own post … )

After reading a related thread (11.3 Compiz won’t start), I issued the following

compiz --replace

from terminal. This presented the message “segmentation fault”, I logged out of KDE, and logged back in. Compiz is back as the Window Manager, and is configurable.

It seems that my problem lies in the changing to Compiz via KDE, and I have a resolution.

Thanks, again, for the assistance.
