Thread: Dolphin file manager will not do real time file posting

  1. #1

Default Dolphin file manager will not do real time file posting

    This query is about Machine # 1 - Asus P5Q Deluxe, C2Duo 3.0GHZ, 4.0 GB ram, nVidia 8500, openSUSE 11.2 64-bit, KDE 4.3.5
I am having a little concern about the way Dolphin file manager behaves in the 64 bit openSUSE and am wondering if there is a solution for it.
Every file I download from the net goes into a 'Check' folder, and I check it over before moving it to it's proper place.
In the 32bit version openSuse 11.2, I can watch files being downloaded to that 'Check' folder. I call this realtime file posting.
In the 64 bit openSUSE 11.2, I have to close the 'Check' folder and reopen it to see the downloaded file, so, everytime I download something, I have to close and reopen the 'Check' folder. It does not post the file to the folder until the folder has been closed and reopened.
I have checked the settings of both machines for Dolphin file manager and can see nothing [apparently] different, yet this still persists.
Would anyone have any ideas why this might be and how I can correct this?
    Thanks

Even though I also had this problem and have been told it doesn't exist,
    1) You could goto YAST -> Software and upgrade KDE4.3.x to KDE4.4.0 (but if your running from KDE it WILL break your system)
    2) Better is login to CLI and use zypper to update KDE4.3.x to KDE4.4.0 then you can reboot and use your new KDE with all fixed.

for more info: Do search for dolphin fails to update or visit KDE themselves and search for dolphin problems

    best luck

I was relieved to know there is a fairly easy fix. I did as you had suggested and posted at the KDE forum as well.
So far, the only thing they have suggested is that I hit the refresh [F5] on that folder when I download something new.
I think I like your idea better, so I will use zypper to update KDE to 4.4.
I have googled this and this is what I came up with:

    Code:
1- Open Terminal and become root by su -, and type:

    zypper dup

2- Type y upon asking for upgrading.
    It is from this site:
    .:. ANL4U .:. LiNuX Addicted Install/Upgrade to KDE4.4.3 in openSUSE 11.2

As I am not all that familiar with zypper, could you tell me if this would be the correct way to upgrade KDE using zypper.
    Thanks again for your help.

Apparently using "zypper dup" will upgrade all and sundry on my computer and may even overwrite some software from certain repos [packman] and replace it with software from other repos [opensuse].

zypper dup' is basically 'zypper up -t package' without any
constrains from your installed packages, i.e. no vendor check/
arch check/downgrade check. Thus, you should have a close eye
on what it wants to do every time you run it.
So maybe this command is not what I want after all.
Is there a zypper command that will only upgrade KDE?
I will google a bit to see what I can find.

    Use Yast - Software Management

Select the newly added kde repo and do this
ImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing

    @LaQuirrELL:
If you read method-1 from the link from my site above which you posted, it is mentioned to select the repos you want to update without any terminal thing through YaST. Which is also mentioned by carl above in post#6. That will upgrade your KDE without touching other applications and repos.

    Good luck!

Using the CLI would be better than using YAST from with-in an active KDE session. Check 'zypper --help' or you can use 'help zypper ' for complete instructions on managing packages with zypper. zypper can upgrade all, uninstall a single and even install or upgrade a single package. The difference is that if you use YAST from with-in KDE and choose to upgrade or replace KDE with a new version you will be effectively be trying to change a program in use. As an alternative, if you have gnome, you may use YAST to upgrade the KDE since it will be gnome that is running while KDE is idle.

In my experience effecting the live session will happen in both cases, either it is YaST or zypper if some one upgrade the whole packages from different versions. zypper ps after upgrading and one will see what packages are effected, that will make it sure to logged out and login again or reboot.

You are not in Windows OS anymore. Linux kernel is what is running at the core, which in turn is running either in CLI mode or WinManager (xsession mode). If you use zypper to upgrade or replace KDE version it will work fine since none of it is actively running. Also if you are running Gnome as a desktop in an xsession and choose to replace or upgrade KDE this too can work since again KDE is just sitting dormant in the hdd like any other group of files.
As for having to log-in again to KDE yes once KDE is upgraded or replaced, you will need to either restart the xserver and log-in. While some do choose to reboot (old windows habit), Linux can and will continue fine without such.

    Hope this helps.
