Firefox crashes - New installation of SuSE 11.3

Hello,

I’ve installed SuSE 64 11.3 (with updates) as a new installation 4 times because of video driver problems. On the 3rd installation Firefox crashes. I had no difficulties with 11.2 with the same hardware. I followed CAF’s suggestion to another user to add it to the repo list and run a zypper install. No difference. I’ve added no new hardware. I then re-installed SuSE and made no changes to any setting or driver, but again, no Firefox continues to crash.

HARDWARE:
Video card: ATI HD 5870 running I believe at 1920x1200
1366 CPU 2.8 GHz
MB: Asus P6X58D Premium
Ram: 6 gb

Otherwise, no exotic hardware.

Any suggestions? What additional information might be of use to identify the problem?

Many thanks

Mark

Not sure I recall what you refer to, but if you now have a default install of 11.3 and a new .mozilla folder
Post result of starting firefox from a terminal

Okay, I have to admit my ignorance - I could not find a mozilla folder with any executables and I am not certain how to run or start firefox from terminal mode. (run /…/mozilla/firefox)? #

Mark (very red faced)

I said .mozilla (see the dot) it’s hidden. It contains all your settings/bookmarks.

To start FF from a terminal just type: firefox

Okay, I think I figured it out: usr/bin/firefox. Run “sh firefox”. Here is the result.

Please do this:

open a terminal and with your mouse copy and paste this code and hit enter

mv .mozilla .mozilla-old

Now try starting firefox from the menu or desktop launcher

Entered the mv commend. No error message returned. Alas, opened Firefox from desktop launcher and it again failed. The error info is as follows:

Appears the same. Could there be a legacy setting from a prior installation? I assume a clean installation of the o/s would be just that - pristine. This all started with an effort to install a new video driver.

Please go to Yast - Software Management
View by repos select mozilla
From top menu select Package > All Packages > Update Unconditionally

As it seems to be not related to your .mozilla folder you might want to restore the original
You can do that by viewing hidden files, go to .mozilla and delete it, then rename .mozilla-old to .mozilla

Try firefox after the update/re-install of packages

To run firefox in a terminal, open the terminal and type

firefox

to check if you have a .mozilla (note the dot a the beginning of the name)
folder type in the terminal

ls ~/.mozilla

openSUSE 11.2 64 bit | Intel Core2 Quad Q8300@2.50GHz | Gnome 2.28 | GeForce
9600 GT | 4GB Ram
openSUSE 11.3 64 bit | Intel Core2 Duo T9300@2.50GHz | Gnome 2.30 | Quadro
FX 3600M | 4GB Ram

Forgot one thing:
If you have a .mozilla folder try

rm -rf ~/.mozilla

this deletes all old firefox setting and by starting firefox again it
creates a fresh new one.

openSUSE 11.2 64 bit | Intel Core2 Quad Q8300@2.50GHz | Gnome 2.28 | GeForce
9600 GT | 4GB Ram
openSUSE 11.3 64 bit | Intel Core2 Duo T9300@2.50GHz | Gnome 2.30 | Quadro
FX 3600M | 4GB Ram

It will take a while - I selected Mozilla, then Package>All Packages >update unconditionally. There are about 3.9 GB (1735 packages) which are being installed.
