    I hope you read http://www.coreboot.org/Download_coreboot

"There is no easy to install package"

and checked if your hardware is supported

    http://www.coreboot.org/Supported_Motherboards

and check the appropriate build tutorial

You can brick your machine playing with the BIOS code.

    Just a warning

A good preparation is of course to to it without compromising the hardware
and build coreboot for qemu (worst thing which can happen is you trash the
virtual machine and have to create a new one).

    http://www.coreboot.org/QEMU_Build_Tutorial

And to add my 2ct, I do not feel experienced enough (except playing with the
emulation which can be fun) to use this for my own machine.

I would be interested to hear the rationale for using coreboot if one is not
a brilliant expert (and I am not) when it comes to such low level things.

Welcome to coreboot - coreboot, it is a LinuxBIOS. If you find yourself in vendor trap where you can not make hardware changes (you end up paying 3 times for hardware and get 3 months warranty), please install coreboot and make appropriate changes in order to integrate new hardware.

If it were me I'd do a backup of the BIOS with the vendor utilities and make sure I had someone with a ROM burner and the proper chips nearby...
