Default Problem with Kaffeine in 11.3

After installing 11.3 as an update from 11.2 Kaffeine was working but Skype was not. Following various suggestions on this site I eventually got Skype working but now Kaffeine crashes every time I try to start it, this is the message I get:

Application: Kaffeine (kaffeine-xbu), signal: Segmentation fault

Can anyone please explain what it all means in very simple English and what an ignoramus can do to put it right?

I should perhaps explain that although I have been using SuSE since version 9 I am totally incapable of understanding terminal work. I have so far managed, to a large extent, by trial and error but it seems that as versions get better it gets more and more difficult to fix problems. The help provided by OpenSUSE is very good but as one gets older it gets more and more difficult to remember instructions so that they can be followed - you need two pc's one being fixed and a working one to provide the instuctions side by side!
Many thanks to anyone who can help an elderly incompetent,

Can you remember what changes you made to get skype working? That might give someone more clues for your problem with Kaffeine.

The xine backend being used by kaffeine does not like the h264 formatted video you are trying to play.

Have you tried to play other video formats with kaffeine?

Unfortunately I do not know specifically what got Skype working, I followed all the various threads and had ensured I had all the required files installed and it was still not working then for some inexplicable reason it started working.
The big problem is when I try something and it does not work I go on to the next suggestion, perhaps I should make a habit of undoing the attempts that don't work before moving to the next suggestion.

    oldcpu,

Thank you for your response your posts have been invaluable in helping me in the past.
Kaffeine actually crashes before I get a chance to ask it to do anything so I have not asked it to play any video. When I start Kaffeine it is usually to watch Digital TV which is the 5th selection box on screen when Kaffeine starts.

That's an honest answer - I understand and have been there myself.

Sometimes more than one suggestion is needed, so there is no hard and fast rule on that. You could keep detailed notes of each one you tried, to facilite undoing them one at a time if and when necessary, or to provide info here for example.

The only thing I can think of trying, is to open Terminal (commandline) as normal user and start Kaffeine by entering kaffeine. You may get more information as the error messages appear in Terminal. Copy/paste the messages and post them here.

Just tried the suggestion of opening Kaffeine in terminal it crashes just the same and this is all terminal tells me:
    Application 'kaffeine-xbu' crashing...
    sock_file=/home/john/.kde4/socket-linux-o2jn/kdeinit4__0

I'm afraid it doesn't mean anything to me other than it is still crashing.

Ok. What version of kaffeine do you have installed? On 11.3 I have: kaffeine-1.0-1.pm.2.1.x86_64

Also, what version for installed libqt4 packages i.e. names beginning "libqt4" (you can search on libqt4 in Yast2)? I have six packages, all at 4.6.3-1.5 except one (libqt4-sql-mysql at 4.6.3-1.3).

Have same version as you installed for Kaffeine.
Have a total of twelve libqt4 installed all 4.6.3-1.5 except two at 4.6.3-1.3(libqt4-sql-mysql and libqt4-sql-mysql -32bit)
The difference from you is that I have all the 32bit versions of libqt4 as well as the 64bit.

Ok. Needed to check those, as I found a Skype problem thread that had one suggestion of upgrading one of those libqt4 to the level we have, and another suggesting updating all to that level as a fix.

Kaffeine uses xine, so it could be useful to try another xine based player. Have you installed xine-ui? You could try that. If not can you install it from packman(?) You will get a menu entry at Applications>Multimedia>Video Player>xine. If it works, that should eliminate xine from the problem. If it fails, run xine-ui from the terminal as well, just to make sure you get all the error info.
