Default KDE 4.5: Hard lock ups

Is anyone else using KDE 4.5 and getting hard freezes when changing any of the appearance settings like the desktp background or window decorations? Then when you have to reboot the background is back to what it was before?

    Not getting this.

Try making adjustments without desktop effects enabled.

Hmmm...So far so good...I wonder if there's a workaround for this...

What graphics card do you have and did you install the driver? Of are you using the standard one available?

i can confirm those problems (with desktop effects enabled, intel GM45/i915, opensuse 11.3, intel driver version 2.12, kde 4.5).
in systemsettings, right after i click on the "apply" button, kde freezes completely and does not react any more. but the mouse pointer is still movable and does sometimes change its appearance when hovering certain (invisible :-) ) elements. i am also able to restart X11 by pressing strg+alt+backspace.

dmesg and /var/log/messages do not show anything when this problem occurs.

the problem happens with no ".kde4" folder present, i removed it before.

as i did not find any workaround, i have to go back to kde 4.4 now :-(

do you have desktop effects enabled? and do you have the same driver version (2.12)?

i am sorry, but the link you posted describes a different system-wide freeze, which is most likely this bug: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=615649

i am in the happy situation that on my system, both bugs happen. they can easily be distinguished because when the whole system is frozen, you can not restart X11 and you can not move your mouse. furthermore, the problem in this topic is limited to kde 4.5, but the link above describes a freeze which occurs with kde 4.4, 4.5 and even gnome.

this topic here seems to describe a kde-specific problem where the rest of the system still works and where you can easily restart X11.

nevertheless, thank you for you answer :-)
