There is only one effect that can be troublesome. The blur effect can destroy a good desktop experience. Disable the blur effect and there shouldn't be any problems. But I can imagine turning them all off. Three different machines with different hardware in all of the and effects work just peachy.

So even if I were the only person not having problems that would mean NOT everyone is turning off effects.
I have had problem in 11.4 with alt-tab effect, the flip effect bork my video and at the end disable all effects

    Hi.

First things first. Thanks a lot for this how-to.

Today I came across this how-to linked by a different topic thread. I was so surprised that I did not see it earlier because my method was all the time to add the nVidia repository directly via YaST, and that was it!

Now I'm seeing (learning) 2 things in order to have a correct nvidia installation. 1. Modifying the /grub/menu.lst and 2. changing a system kernel parameter in NO_KMS_IN_INITRD.

I really don't have any idea of why this has to be done I'd really appreciate a very very short explanation (in case you have the time off course) on how this works.

As said in my first line, Thanks so much and Kind Regards

    Luis

PS: If very bussy just ignore me

KMS= kernel modesetting : Having NO KMS will mean it disables the nvidia driver that is built in the kernel

The 'nomodeset' added to menu.lst is the same and technically it shouldn't be needed if you do the above.
For example, I added nomodeset to my my menu.lst and then removed it, and everything is fine.
    It's 'Belt and Braces' approach.

So basically you don't want 2 drivers trying to do the job, it causes problems.
Like when you have a back seat driver in your car.

Please try - be sure to use the version for your install 11.3 or 11.4

    ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.4/
    or
    ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.3/

But they are not browsable in your browser!

You should be able to add it via Yast > Software respos add > Community > Nvidia
